Job Description: The Campus Safety Department of Colgate University, located in the village of Hamilton, New York in scenic central Madison County, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Campus Safety Dispatcher. This beautiful home of Colgate was recently named one of America's most friendly towns by Forbes magazine. The Campus Safety Department is a non-sworn agency consisting of approximately twenty full-time and twenty-five to thirty part-time staff with the mission of maintaining a safe and secure living and working environment that is conducive to learning, and is consistent with the academic goals and policies of the institution. Our primary concern is the wellbeing of our students, staff, faculty and visitors.

Campus Safety Dispatchers are typically the first point of contact for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The dispatcher is responsible for providing professional dispatch communication services to the university community ensuring quick response for services, accuracy of information, and speed in relaying accurate information to campus safety officer's in the field.

The efficiency of this department is dependent upon the efficiency of its communications. The dispatcher is expected to act in a professional, helpful and friendly manner in order to provide a 'quality customer service experience' through professional and effective interactions and communications with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and visitors on a daily basis.

Campus Safety works with Dean of the College staff, faculty and student groups to promote a more inclusive campus community culture, and participates in outreach and communication efforts to women and/or underrepresented student groups. We are committed to increasing the diversity of our Campus Safety workforce to more closely resemble the demographic of our campus community that we serve.

Essential Functions: 1. Responsible as the Campus Safety (CS) first level of contact for students, faculty staff & general public. All points of contact are to be answered promptly. Always provides a positive customer service demeanor. Treat all customers/potential customers courteously at all times, being fair, polite, helpful, respectful & professional.
2. Required to promptly receive emergency & non-emergency calls requesting CS assistance; determine nature, location and priority of the call & dispatch patrol cars & personnel accordingly; receive information from & dispatch assignments & information to various field units concerning incidents & activity; assume responsibility for coordinating radio communication between CS officers, other personnel, & off campus agencies. Contact fire & ambulance in emergency situations & coordinate proper response. Maintain communication with personnel, track location, conditions of situation, & respond to requests for assistance; operate two-way radio, cell phone and/or land line telephone, & CAD/RMS software.
3. Responsible for operation of University info line telephone currently equipped with an auto-attendant.
4. Position normally works 8 & 12 hour shifts, including nights, weekends & holidays.
5. Maintain a working knowledge of university & department policies and procedures, keeping up-to-date on required information to effectively enforce & warn violators of rule infractions.
6. Documents & reports incidents, disturbances, complaints, alarms, & any irregularities observed from the dispatcher's perspective via shift logs or other forms as required.
7. Prepares & maintains accurate records & logs of all radio transmissions, telephone calls and other inquiries or incidents; posts appropriate entries in logs & records reflecting calls received & dispatched. Prepares, enters information, & types a variety of reports, inter-office special reports, & other confidential information.
8. Frequently checks the general CS email account in order to receive notification of upcoming events through email & communicate events to staff by print and log entries. At the beginning of shifts, run reports outlining current and future events.
9. Must be able to work independently w/minimal supervision, completing assigned tasks & follow up, efficiently & promptly. Must understand the constraints & legal/ethical requirements of confidentiality & privilege of information.
10. May train and/or have oversight for other officers & student employees, when applicable.
11. Responsible for issuance & data entry processing of parking permits, parking ticket appeals, & other data entry as needed.
12. Responsible for maintaining radio contact with the patrol officers in emergency situations & throughout the work shift, recording building security checks as well as other shift activity. Required to monitor other campus radio frequencies, acting as the main emergency contact person for Facilities/Building and Grounds personnel, EMS personnel, multiple Athletic event staff, CS student employees & confined space entry personnel.
13. Monitors & engages in radio communications with the fire department, police department & EMS agencies.
14. Needs to be familiar with the general layout of the entire campus in order to effectively direct patrol officers & outside agencies in responding to campus facilities.
15. Has to possess a working knowledge of & monitor specialty equipment within the dispatching center area such as voice recorders, TTY equipment, alarm & general computers, phone consoles, CCTV cameras, card access & radio equipment, fax, copying machine and several various CS related software programs.
16. May provide a variety of other necessary and/or requested services to the entire University community.
17. Performs other job related duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications
(Education and Experience)
: High school diploma or equivalent required with a 2-year college education in a criminal justice field or related field(s) preferred. This position serves as the first point of contact for students, staff, faculty and visitors to the university. Excellent oral and written communication skills along with the ability to operate two-way radios are required along with the ability to interact effectively in a diversified community. Ability to perform a variety of duties involved in receiving, evaluating, prioritizing, and relaying calls for emergency and non-emergency campus safety assistance. Ability to multitask and work in a busy and occasionally stressful environment is essential. Organizational typing and computer skills, operation of two-way radios, monitor and respond to various radio frequencies, telephone lines, fire and intrusion alarm panels, CCTV's, and monitors are required. Prepare and maintain records and files and provide operational support within the Office of Campus Safety's primary communication center.

Familiarity with Microsoft Word, databases, and the Banner Information System is considered a plus.

Experience in communicating and interacting effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and visitors on a daily basis. Responding to emergency and stressful situations and working different shifts desired. Experience in recognizing and resolving and/or referring problems appropriately. Experience in telephone and radio communication highly desired.

Must possess stable psychological health and be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner. Must possess and maintain current and valid motor vehicle operator's license with a responsible driving history. Must not have had any serious, job-related criminal convictions. Must be able to successfully complete the required field training program and any other required training. The incumbent is designated as an "essential employee" and may be required to remain on duty beyond the normal shift or report to duty without advance notice.

Additional Preferred Qualifications: - Associate's degree in criminal justice or related field or equivalent military experience preferred.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and familiarity with Banner desired.
- Previous related work experience as a campus safety/security dispatcher, officer or police officer, and/or prior experience working in a college or university public safety environment is preferred.
- Experience in handling emergency and stressful situations highly desired.
- Knowledge of local and state laws desired.
