I. Job Summary

The salesperson interacts with the customer by greeting and assisting them with their project while in the store or on the phone. It is a professional position requiring knowledge of the building and home improvement industry, personal skills such as communication, and technical skills such as quoting, and computer knowledge. Tasks associates with customer service level are required.

II. Qualifications

A. Education: Basic education which includes ability to competently read and write.

B. Training and Experience: Some experience in selling/serving customers and building materials knowledge is desirable, as well as limited typing and key punch skills, but not required.

C. Job Knowledge: Should have general knowledge of the building industry.

D. Physical Demands: Work requires some physical effort; involves standing, much walking and medium lifting. Works in an air-conditioned environment as well as non-A/C controlled environment. (Important: This job is classified in the physical demands section of the job description [Form IV-31] as constant medium work and occasional heavy work. This form must be reviewed with and signed by the applicant.

III. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

A. Must be familiar and in compliance with Stine Policies and Procedures

B. Serve customers, either store-wide or in specific departments assigned.

C. Change price cards on bins, displays, etc., as necessary.

D. Rearrange merchandise assortments to keep them neat, clean, and attractively displayed.

E. Demonstrate the use of merchandise when requested or when such demonstrations are encouraged by the customer.

F. Watch for shoppers who may need assistance and provide needed advice or information.

G. Take incoming telephone calls.

H. Restock merchandise displays as they are depleted by customer purchases.

I. Watch for shoplifters and take action, in line with company policy, that will discourage shoplifting.

J. Assist customers with the handling of large or heavy items.

K. Advise the store or department manager of shortages, damages, back-orders, etc., using appropriate forms.

L. Advise store or department manager, as far in advance as possible, of any desired deviations from assigned work schedule.

M. Make price changes, by hand or mechanically, on merchandise according to price-change sheets, invoices, price books, etc.

N. Attend store meetings, training sessions, etc., as arranged by the firm.

O. Remove sales and promotional displays, prices, etc., and rearrange stock following promotional events.

P. Keep surplus stock in warehouse and storage areas neat, clean, and orderly.

Q. Handle customer complaints as quickly and efficiently as possible.

R. Learn all full service areas (key making, paint mixing, glass cutting, etc.).

S. Make recommendations to the manager, or department manager, when new lines should be added, old lines dropped, basic stock quantities adjusted, etc.

T. Read trade magazines, manufacturer literature, sales training courses, etc., to gain new product knowledge.

U. Make suggestions for rules or policy changes when such changes would improve sales, profits, efficiency, etc.

V. Relieve as cashier.

W. Handle special orders for non-stock items.

X. Reorder merchandise according to established buying procedures and methods.

Y. Build special merchandise displays for sales, promotions, and other special selling events.

Z. Maintain departmental inventories at established levels for maximum turnover and profitability.

AA. Quote prices on outside jobs (deck project, kitchen remodel, flooring, etc.).

Minimum Requirements

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions are components of Worker Characteristics. Physical Demands analysis is a systematic way of describing the physical activities that a job requires. It is concerned only with the physical demands of the job; it is not concerned with the physical capacity of the worker. Environmental Conditions are the surroundings in which a job is performed. To be considered present, an Environmental Condition must be specific and related to the job.

We, at Stine, Inc. have attempted to classify each in one of the five categories listed below, which could involve up to 20 factors in physical demands and 14 factors in environmental conditions. Each position is performed as a constant routine in the job function or is occasionally performed. A further definition of each physical demand and/or environmental condition with the examples can be in the “Handbook for Job Analysis: put out by the Department of Labor. It can be reviewed with the office manager at each store.

Constant– MEDIUM WORK

Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work. Also, may include the following physical demands; climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, near acuity and depth perception, accommodation, color vision and field of vision. Environmental condition factors may include wet and/or humid, noise intensity level moderate, atmospheric conditions, exposure to weather, proximity to moving mechanical parts and working in high, exposed places.

Occasional – HEAVY WORK

Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work, Also, may include the following physical demands; climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, near acuity and depth perception, accommodation, color vision and field of vision. Environmental condition factors may include wet and/or humid, noise intensity level of loud, atmospheric condition, exposure to weather, proximity to moving mechanical parts and working in high, exposed places and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
