Basic Function (Objective):

Responsible for all areas of operation of the store in the manager’s absence, which includes customer service, human resources, profit and loss, and all other functions of the store. Assistant Managers are also responsible for the efficient operation of their assigned shift within company policy.

Principal Activities

General:

1. Observes shift operating hours at all times as assigned by the Store Manager. 

2. Ensures the availability of reliable transportation to meet scheduled work times and timely deposits as required. 

3. Performs specific tasks as assigned by the Store Manager. 

4. Assists the Store Manager in seeing that the store maintains an acceptable grade on the monthly store inspection. 

5. Adheres to all city, county, and state ABC and tobacco regulations. 

6. Provides all customers with prompt, courteous service. 

7. Follows the work schedule as posted, unless a change in schedule is arranged with the Store Manager. 

8. Ensures the Store Manager is made aware of all sales, cash and operating discrepancies. 

9. Operates shift within company guidelines to achieve sales and profits. 

10. Follows proper clocking in and out procedures through the store computer. 

Shift Responsibilities:

1. Prepares a shift change report at the completion of shift in accordance with company guidelines. 

2. Notifies Store Manager of any discrepancies in the operating results of the shift report. 

3. Assures the proper sale and accounting for money orders during shift, as described in company policy. 

4. Rings all sales properly according to company policy. 

5. Accurately posts markups/markdowns, store use of merchandise, voids, bad merchandise, write-offs within established guidelines. 

Security:

1. Shares responsibility for controlling store inventory with Store Manager. 

2. Follows company policy with regard to excessive cash in registers and safe as directed by the Store Manager. 

3. Protects company assets at all times. 

Merchandising:

1. Ensures cooler, store shelves and displays are fully stocked and fronted. 

2. Ensures all store equipment, including fountain, coffee and food service areas are properly cleaned and maintained. 

3. Ensures correct pricing for all merchandise. 

4. Utilizes suggestive selling techniques with customers. 

Maintenance:

1. Ensures windows floors, shelving, counters and the outside of the store remain clean at all times. 

2. Immediately advises Store Manager of any maintenance problems. 

Management:

1. Responsible for transmitting the daily report in a timely and accurate manner as assigned by the Store Manager. 

2. Assists the Manager by insuring that shift operation procedures are followed and properly implemented on all shifts by all employees. This includes register operations, shift duties and money handling procedures. 

3. Share responsibility with the Manager for insuring that controllable expenses are minimized and maintained within company guidelines/restrictions. 

4. Assists the Manager in controlling inventory levels and shrink by following and enforcing all company policies and procedures concerning shoplifting, ordering and receiving merchandise, vendor check-in, pricing and price changes, promotions, monthly inventory, accounting, paperwork and cash register operations. 

Experience:

• Previous retail experience

• Some management experience preferred

• High School diploma or GED 

Skills:

• Good attention to detail

• Analytical and reasoning skills

• Able to work well with others

• Good communication skills
