The City of Lakewood is seeking applications for a seasonal Visitor Center Assistant to staff the front-desk of the Bear Creek Lake Park Visitor Center (near C470 and Morrison Road) and perform a variety of customer-service functions related to visitor services and administration.
  • 32-40 hours per week. All applicants must be able to work weekends and some holiday and evening hours will be required. A typical schedule will be Sunday-Wednesday but may vary depending on department needs.
  • Starting pay is $10 per hour
 
 Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The position will staff the front desk or entrance gate at Bear Creek Lake Park and perform a variety of functions related to visitor services and administration. Specific duties may include:
Greeting visitors in a cheerful and courteous manner.
Answering questions about park facilities, amenities, resources and rules on the phone and in person.
Selling park passes and camping passes.
Fee collection from park visitors, and entry into computer revenue system. Fee collection includes cash, credit cards and checks.
Scheduling camping and facility reservations using computer based software.
Performing administrative tasks including data entry, making signs, laminating and other duties as assigned.
Coordinating with park staff by phone and park radio.
Supporting naturalist programs in a variety of ways.
Performing basic cleaning and building upkeep as needed.
Perform other routine functions and special assignments as directed by supervisor, including assignments that may be outside the primary area of employment.
Handling stressful and emergency situations capably and correctly.
Balancing of day's income receipts.
May also be required to perform as an ANS boat inspector and maintain the required state certification.
 
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Supervision Received:
VC Assistant: Receives supervision from the Visitor Center Specialist.
Gate Attendant: Receives supervision from the regular Park Rangers.

None.
 
 Essential Qualifications:
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent required.
College coursework relating to natural resources management or environmental education preferred.
 
Experience:
Prefer experience working in a park or open space setting.
Prefer experience-registering participants for park passes, camping and picnic sites.
 
Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Prefer a valid driver's license and good driving record.
May be required to maintain State of Colorado boat inspection and decontamination certification.
 
 KSA's and Physical/Mental Reqs:
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to communicate with a wide variety of people, including citizens and City staff in person, by radio, using tact and diplomacy.
Knowledge of area wildlife, history, plant species and general natural history.
Basic computer and typing skills.

Must be able to pay attention to detail and handle multiple tasks.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Lifting and Carrying:
Ability to lift and carry files and notebooks that may weigh up to 25 pounds, using assistance as needed.
 
Body Positions:
VC Assistant: Work is performed primarily at desk. Sustained sitting is required for answering the telephone and using a desktop computer. Will also be standing, stooping, kneeling, and reaching to perform tasks. May be moving about park buildings and property. Position requires the ability to input large amounts of data using repetitive motion on a consistent daily basis.
Gate Attendant: Work requires some sitting in the office. Work requires frequent standing and walking. Work requires occasional bending, kneeling, balancing. Administrative work is performed in an office environment, frequently moving about, standing, sitting and bending.
 
Hearing:
Must be able to respond to requests in person on the telephone and radio.
 
Vision:
Use vision to perform word processing functions, work with written documents and read maps.
 
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Mathematics:
Basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division used for giving change, selling park passes and revenue reporting.
 
Remembering:
Must remember instructions given as well as City and park policies and procedures.
 
Language Ability:
Must communicate verbally, and in writing with citizens and staff at all levels of the organization.
 
Reasoning:
Must be able to interpret basic requirements, regulations and ordinances.
Must be able to take direction and follow instruction from supervisor.

Work is performed in an office setting with some work done outdoors.
Frequent contact with citizens, staff and others.
