POSITION PURPOSE -
This position provides professional legal support by assisting supervising attorneys with a wide range of tasks. This position involves commercial litigation, including lawsuits filed by customers, contract disputes, class actions, business torts, construction, and real estate law. Specialists will draft legal and business communication, conduct general file and database management, gather documents, respond to discovery requests, and respond to customer legal inquiries. This position also involves significant contact with customers and opposing counsel, as well as the management of customer litigation handled by outside law firms.

MAJOR TASKS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES -

  • Handle the day-to-day administration of customer claims, lawsuits, filings, etc.
  • Gather relevant documents and conduct research for discovery purposes, obtain affidavits, recommend course of action, etc.
  • Under supervision, draft business/legal communications typically using template forms (e.g., discovery, cease/desist letters)
  • General file/database management - maintain complete and accurate electronic and paper files for all assigned matters
  • Negotiate settlement of smaller matters (e.g., small-claims litigation,)
  • Interview witnesses
  • Coordinate with outside counsel
  • Other tasks as assigned by supervisor


NATURE AND SCOPE -

  • Position reports to Sr. Corporate Counsel
  • No direct reports
  • Typically requires frequent persuasion or influence of others 
  • Typically, procedures for analyzing situations and drawing conclusions are very diverse
  • Typically considers many different options or procedures when solving problems
  • Typically, once given general assignments, determines priorities and defines what should be done and how to do it


ENVIRONMENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS -

  • Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS -

  • Must be eighteen years of age
  • Must pass the Drug Test
  • Must pass the Background Check
  • Must pass pre-employment tests if applicable


EDUCATION REQUIRED -

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of an associate's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS -

  • Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.


ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS -

  • Legally eligible to work in the United States


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS -

  • Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program or equivalent claims management certificate
  • 3-5 years experience as a paralegal in a law firm or corporate legal department or 3-5 years experience as a claims adjuster at a claims management company or insurer
  • Commercial litigation experience—experience in litigation involving contract disputes, business torts, class actions, construction, and real estate law.
  • Customer service experience
  • Spanish language skills
