POSITION PURPOSE:

Supports the Rogue Valley Manor Pharmacy by stocking, assembling, and distributing medications, assisting residents and employees with their needs as they relate to the specific responsibilities below.

LICENSURE:

At the time of pharmacy employment, He/She must apply for a 1 year non-renewable Pharmacy Technician License. As per Oregon Administrative Rule 855-025-0010, all pharmacy technicians must become nationally certified one year after initial licensure or before the licensee’s 19th birthday, whichever is later.

To be licensed as a Certified Oregon Pharmacy Technician, you must:

A)    Have a high school diploma or GED at the time the Board issues the license;

B)    Take and pass a national certification exam through PTCB or ICPT.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Greets and assists health care providers, residents and employees in person or by phone to the RVM Pharmacy.
  • Answers questions and requests, referring inquiries to the pharmacist
  • Creates or updates profiles of the patient’s health and insurance information in the computer.
  • Assists the pharmacist, under direct supervision, in the practice of pharmacy, in accordance with local, state, federal, and company regulations
  • Communicates with insurance carriers to obtain payment for prescription claims
  • Verifies, at the point of sale, that the customer receives correct prescription
  • Communicates with prescribers and their agents to obtain refill authorization
  • Maintains an awareness of developments in the community and pharmaceutical fields that relate to job responsibilities and integrate them into own practices and obtain the required continuing education as required by PTCB or ICPT on a yearly basis.
  • Transports medications, drug delivery devices, and other pharmacy equipment from the pharmacy to the nursing units and clinic.
  • Picks up copies of physician orders, automated medication administration records, and unused medications from the nursing units and return them to the pharmacy.
  • Assists in training of new employees.
  • Maintains pharmacy inventory by checking pharmaceutical stock, anticipate needed medications and supplies, place and expedite orders, verify receipts, and remove outdated drugs.
  • Complies with procedures, rules, and regulations to maintain a safe and clean pharmacy
  • Adheres to infection-control policies and protocols
  • Organizes medications for pharmacist to dispense by reading medication orders and prescriptions, preparing labels, and calculating quantities
  • Records and files physicians’ orders and prescriptions
  • Calculates, records, and issues charges.
  • Prepares reports by collecting and summarizing information

Knowledge:

  • Needs to have customer service experience and phone skills
  • Basic typing, computer, cash register, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment (Fax machines, computers, typewriters, photocopiers and duplicating machines)
  • Ability to read, speak, write and follow oral and written directions
  • Have a current license from the Oregon Board of Pharmacy and be in good standing
  • Adhere to the rules and regulations set forth by the Oregon Board of Pharmacy

 Independent Judgment:

Needs to take initiative and exhibit good judgment in dealing with residents, co-workers, health care providers and the general public.  Must have the ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality as it relates to residents and employees of the Manor.

Relations with Others:

Ability to use tact, patience and diplomacy in relating with seniors and co-workers.  Ability to work and cooperate well with other employees and the general public.

Working Conditions:

  • Majority of work is sedentary. 
  • Some walking, bending, stooping, twisting, reaching and handling
  • Occasional light lifting up to 35 lbs.
  • On feet the majority of working hours
