Description

What is my job: The Lead Estimator provides estimates and bid packages based on material, labor, equipment, subcontract, and other direct and indirect costs of construction and engineering for projects on request for proposal (RFP) submitted by various sources. This role also provides coordination, supervision and training for Estimators.

How do I make a difference?

Continuously Improving Results
  • Lead as a technical specialist formulating and developing advanced estimating and bid packages concepts, coordinate estimates and suggest alternates (value engineering) where applicable
  • Create conceptual estimates, review with the Estimating Manager, and provide comparisons to other projects
  • Lead value engineering; implement new processes in line with Wegmans standards and drive recommendations on how we could better utilize our resources
  • Analyze specifications, including sketches, blueprints, bills of material, or sample layouts to calculate costs using labor and material pricing, schedules and historical and market data
  • Coordinate with other functional areas (i.e., Management, Business Development, Accounting, Project Cost Analysts, Engineering, Project Managers, and the market), to ensure estimates are realistic and represent anticipated costs to the fullest extent possible, to meet Wegmans business requirements
  • Perform productivity analysis of cost estimates to help with schedule duration as needed
  • Collect cost data from functional representatives, subcontractors and vendors
  • Oversee the maintenance of historical cost data; ensure accuracy and seek opportunities to integrate new technology to improve this process
  • Lead the creation of cost models for cost estimating assemblies; develop the criteria necessary for accurate and valid assessments
  • Ensure accuracy of revised estimates/budgets when scope of project changes
  • Estimate change orders as requested
  • Provide quality assurance/quality control to the estimating process
  • Conduct research and gather information such as Technical Manuals and Parts Lists to clarify specifications for cost analysis, as needed
  • Interface with Project Management, Steering Committees, Executive Management and other departments in support of pre-award and post award proposals, as requested
  • Identify and quantify risks associated with the various proposals and estimates submitted
  • Facilitate the procurement management process; provide procurement information from bids to the field team to create procurement documents such as contracts and purchase orders and process documents to verify accuracy


Providing Incredible, Knowledge Based Service
  • Supervise the work of Construction Estimators; review and approve all bids and ensure other departments are providing compliant data to the Estimators
  • Manage project timelines by working closely with department leads to ensure the estimates are submitted on time and meet Wegmans requirements
  • Collaborate with Design, Maintenance, and field teams to establish best practices, ensure work is aligned and shared goals are achieved
  • Develop relationships with contractors and establish Wegmans’ reputation as a trusted partner; utilize these relationships to negotiate future stakeholders’ bids and provide feedback

Qualifications

What skills, learnings, and experiences are required?

  • 7 or more years of Construction estimating or equivalent experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field, and/or equivalent experience
  • Experience supervising others
  • Experience working with Estimating software, as well as proficiency working with the Microsoft Office suite
  • Possess thorough knowledge of construction materials, equipment, costs, and procedures, as well as an understanding of the proposal process, project execution methodology, and contracts
  • Possess knowledge of the following:
    • Building related construction systems such as concrete, masonry, walls, roofing, steel, finishes, and décor, as well as the ability to read building related drawings
    • Electrical and Control systems construction, as well as the ability to read and follow related drawings and specifications
    • Mechanical systems construction, such as Plumbing, HVAC, Fire protection and Food Market Refrigeration, as well as the ability to read and follow related drawings and specifications
  • Excellent presentation skills

What skills, learnings, and experiences are preferred and will set me apart?
  • American Society of Professional Estimators certification, or PMI’s Project Management Professional certification, or Construction Management Association of America certification, or Licensure as a Professional Engineer
  • Experience with applicable codes and food safety considerations
  • Experience estimating retail and/or food oriented projects
  • Experience with BIM technology and integration with Estimating systems
  • Possess strategic business planning skills seizing opportunities for continuous improvement to shape the future direction of a department; facilitating others through the development of long-term goals; creating competitive and breakthrough strategic plans
  • Ability to drive innovation, seizing opportunities to put creative ideas into action. Can look beyond today to inspire and motivate teams to strive for higher standards and lead the innovation process to develop strategies and drive change


Work environment:
  • Work includes sitting for prolonged periods, repetitive hand and arm movements, frequent to constant use of the computer, frequent use of the telephone, along with continuous interaction with customers and co-workers in a fast-paced environment.
  • Travel to job sites is required.
