The main function of the Laboratory Outreach support personnel is to represent the hospital to the public in an efficient, caring manner. Register patients or drop-off samples into the hospital computer system by obtaining demographic and insurance information and ordering laboratory procedures. Obtain blood samples from patients. Daily duties will vary and include reception, registration, order entry, phlebotomy, physicians' office communication and problem solving. Staff working within the hospital will additionally perform both STAT and routine in-patient phlebotomy. Must be open-minded and flexible in order to assist in the efficient operation of the draw stations and their needs.

Responsibilities
  • 1. Obtain all necessary information and prepare all required forms for registration documenting every patient seen. Complete knowledge of the registration procedure to enter/scan this information into the computer system.
  • 2. Must demonstrate service excellence by promoting teamwork and patient quality care in all interactions with patients, co-workers, nurses, physician offices and other departments. Present professional image.
  • 3. Perform phlebotomy efficiently using proper technique after accurately verifying all patient information. Proper patient identification and labeling of specimens according to Policies and Procedures. Responsible for timely collection of STAT blood work and the delivery to the laboratory.
  • 4. Knowledge of the laboratory computer order entry function including the ordering of patient lab tests and the printing of labels.
  • 5. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • 6. Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate test requirements based on the laboratory orders including type of specimen to be collected and any special collection requirements.
Qualifications

EDUCATION


High School Diploma or GED is required; college or technical school courses are preferred.


EXPERIENCE


Two years experience in phlebotomy. Computer keyboarding and interpersonal skills required.


SPECIAL SKILLS


Data entry should be performed with a minimum numbers of errors and the importance of verifying patient data must be emphasized. Working with patients directly; therefore a great deal of emphasIs is placed on interpersonal skills. Phlebotomy skills require manual dexterity with excellent fine motor skills.


PHYSICAL DEMAND


Long periods of typing and data entry. Intense concentration with computers involving data entry. Phlebotomy may require extended periods of standing bent over patients, walking throughout the hospital carrying a basket and using the stairs. The use of fitted masks and Isolation technique may be required.
