Paramedic
Position Summary
The Paramedic is a member of the healthcare team at Jones Regional Medical Center (JRMC).
Job Specifications
Minimum Education/Experience/Certification
High School Diploma or GED
Current State of Iowa Paramedic license
Valid Iowa Drivers license, non-commercial Class D-3 chauffeurs license
Current BCLS certification
Current ACLS certification Paramedics
Skills

Position Accountabilities
General:
1. Assumes leadership position in the field, determining priorities, guiding other EMTs in the delivery of quality patient care.
2. Initiates care using standing orders within their scope of practice.
3. Follows direction of the physician or physician designee by telephone or radio communications when not using standing orders.
4. Demonstrates sound medical judgement following EMS protocols in assessing and observing patients, interpreting signs and symptoms, and initiating appropriate action and intervention.
5. Works cooperatively with law enforcement and fire department at scenes.
6. Assists in all areas as needed and directed.
7. Assists with performance improvement and the collection, compilation and reporting of data as directed.
8. Attend meetings and serves on committees as requested.
Ambulance
1. Functions under guidelines specified in Chapter 141, Code of Iowa
2. Operates ambulance in all weather conditions, having a Class D Chauffeur license.
3. Operates two-way radio system.
4. Reads maps and plat books correctly.
5. Restocks and cleans ambulance after each call.
6. Performs trip sheet patient documentation, ASP form documentation, and uses appropriate authorization forms.
7. Performs daily rig check on A-25 and A-26.
8. Keeps ambulance, equipment and garage clean and disinfected.
9. Performs ambulance office duties as assigned.
Nursing
1. The admission assessment and any subsequent assessments are performed as delegated functions from nursing staff.
2. Performs patient care, procedures and vitals as directed per Medical Charge RN.
3. Performs required documentation to note orders and fill out needed requisitions for ancillary departments.
4. Takes patient care assignments as directed by the charge nurse, to include patients personal hygiene, bathing, changing linens, toiletry needs and oral hygiene.
5. Performs skills on the nursing floor according to Iowa Code 641-139 which lists the EMS Scope of Practice.
6. Assists with telephone and call light duties.
7. Assists with meal tray distribution and pick-up, recording intake on the graphic sheet.
8. Assist with feeding patients as directed per primary nurse and/or charge RN.
9. Perform inpatient and outpatient EKGs.
10. Assist with routine cleaning of patient areas as directed.
11. Restocks the nursing area of supplies Monday, Wednesday and Fridays and any other time as needed.
12. Reports patient care and assignments completed to Medical Charge RN prior to leaving facility for ambulance calls.
13. Notifies ER Charge RN when ambulance calls received, i.e., type of call and trauma alert if necessary.
Emergency Room
1. Performs emergency skills within the scope of practice.
2. Performs documentation of patient care, procedures and vitals as directed.
3. Assists with staffing and/or assisting in ER per Medical Charge RN.
4. Restocks ER supplies every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and other times as needed.
Security
1. Performs security rounds if working the night shift, checking that all entrance doors and alarms are secured.
2. Monitors the security cameras as able.
Other
1. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
2. Follows established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Completes variance reports per policy.
This position warrants access to patient records.
