 Position Summary

Plans, coordinates and provides total patient care specific to diagnosis and age of patients served on a continuing basis and to obtain optimum health for patient and family in accordance with accepted hospital standards and policy and the South Dakota Nurse Practice Act. Consistently employs patient and family-centered care to promote safety, quality and satisfaction. Embedded in patient and family-centered care are the ANA (American Nurses' Association) Standards of Practice and Professional Performance.

Essential Job Functions

  • Demonstrates knowledge of standards, policies and procedures, and integrates knowledge into delivery of care. Performs nursing procedures and treatments according to nursing division and unit specific standards.
  • Establishes nursing care for patients based on nursing process, to include: assessment data and other relevant information; identified nursing diagnosis, needs and problems; appropriate interventions as per standards of nursing practice, policies, established protocol, or as determined by the professional judgment of the RN; patient’s response to interventions; modification of care plan following evaluation of response as needed.
  • Collaborates with physician and healthcare team in the coordination of post-hospital care needs.
  • Handles unanticipated events and crisis situations in a professional manner. Is alert to potential problems and notifies appropriate individual as necessary.
  • Identifies learning needs of patient, family, and staff. Serves as an educator, mentor, consultant, and resource to patients, colleagues, other health care professionals, and the community.
  • Influences multi-disciplinary relationships by enhancing collaborative processes. Shows willingness to share through teaching.
  • Resolves care issues through discussion and cooperation to advance positive patient outcomes.
  • Participates in orienting, teaching, guiding the performance of personnel and/or students.
  • Participates in performance improvement and quality control activities.
  • Utilizes critical thinking in implementing the coordination of medical and nursing interventions. Interventions demonstrate care planning that will promote good clinical outcomes.
  • Utilizes, instructs and supervises appropriate ancillary personnel to assist with treatment in order to meet patient needs and efficiency standards. Directs and assists others on the healthcare team to provide positive outcomes.
  • Participates in the implementation of strategies that promote the National Patient Safety Goals; i.e., handwashing, two identifiers, fall prevention, medication reconciliation, etc.
