Job Summary:
Under close supervision and according to established procedures, performs routine basic nursing procedures necessary to provide for care, comfort and safety of patients. Takes vital signs, assists patients with personal hygiene, feeds and ambulates patients, and so forth according to detailed procedures. Providing care in a manner consistent with their scope of practice and in support of the mission of Saint Francis Medical Center.
Cares for older adolescent, adult and geriatric patients with a variety of medical/surgical problems at various developmental levels. Patients are from both traditional and nontraditional family structures with a variety of sociocultural and educational backgrounds.
Essential Duties:
* Provides for care, comfort and safety of assigned patients under close direction of registered nurse and according to the nursing service policies, procedures and unit-based competencies. In doing so, repositions and ambulates patients, provides for patient's hygiene needs including bathing, HS cares, and oral hygiene; makes beds, etc. Documents all patient care via Meditech.
* Performs and records basic nursing care procedures according to the nursing service policies, procedures and unit-based competencies such as enemas, collection of routine specimens, vital signs, intake and output, daily weights in accordance to detailed procedures. Removes IV catheters when discontinued, clears infusion pump volumes of non-high risk medications, performs Bladder Ultrasounds and performs EKG's.
* Observes patients and reports reactions or changes in condition to appropriate nursing personnel.
* Answers call lights to determine patient needs, responds to patient requests, and/or relays to RN or LPN responsible for patient's care. Transfers patients, beds and patient care equipment to other rooms, adhering to safety precautions.
* Completes various errands as requested such as retrieving and delivering supplies, pharmaceuticals, x-rays, specimens, instruments, test results, and so forth.
* Keeps patient rooms clean and free from clutter. Empties wastebaskets as needed. At time of dismissal, strips patient bed. Periodically cleans refrigerator, Staff break room, patient equipment, etc.
* Transports dismissed patients from patient room to vehicle, making appropriate stops according to dismissal procedure. Checks patient room for belongings and valuables prior to discharge. Checks to be certain patient has dismissal instructions and take home medications.
* Transports patients from Admissions and Emergency area to patient room, as appropriate.
* Provides for nutritional needs of patient by preparing patient and bedside table appropriately, feeding patient and/or assisting as necessary. Sees that patient receives snacks as ordered by dietitian. Documents patient intake and communicates patient likes and dislikes to dietary as needed via Meditech.
* Completes the initial portion of the patient assessment form and shares information with the RN, when new patients are admitted.
* Attends required educational sessions, unit meetings and hospital in-services and completes competencies as designated by the unit. Keeps current with all standards, policies and procedures.
Hours: 1800-0630
Education
* Ability to read in order to interpret type and level of patient care ordered, to write in order to record procedures performed, to understand and follow instructions relating to basic patient care, and to perform simple arithmetic calculations in order to take and record patients' weight and vital signs. This education is normally acquired by completion of at least two years of high school.
License/Certification
* State of Nebraska Certified Nursing Assistant certification required. Additional unit-specific knowledge is obtained through orientation, checklists and competency testing.
* Basic Life Support required within 60 days of hire.
Experience
* Approximately one month on-the-job experience necessary to gain knowledge of basic patient care procedures, to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of unit procedures and schedules, and to appropriately operate computer charting system.
Skills
* Interpersonal skills necessary to exchange factual information with patients, visitors, and nursing personnel in a courteous manner, and to allay apprehensions of patients and visitors. Ability to work with multiple departments to continually improve customer service and to promote a person-centered, healing environment.
