POSITION SUMMARY

Integrates the technical clerical duties and basic care delivery needs to optimize unit function and patient care. Provides safe patient care. Performs clerical duties and receptionist duties associated with preparing, compiling and maintaining the patient records on a clinical nursing unit. Cross trained staff may be required to work on other nursing units as staffing and patient census indicates. Performs other duties as assigned. Is accountable to the nursing director, charge nurse, nursing supervisor, Director of Nursing, executive vice-president of patient care services, the patient and the family.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

1. High school diploma or equivalent. Job requires the ability to read, write, and speak English. Prefer courses in medical terminology, unit secretary training program, or on the job experience.

2. Patient Care Technician certification

3. Essential Technical /Motor Skills: Precise hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity necessary to use the computers, perform clerical and direct patient care activities.

4. Essential Physical Requirements: Ability to move between patient rooms, to ambulate, to use appropriate body mechanics in lifting (>50 pounds), position and transfer patients. Must be able to sit or stand 70 % of worked hours. The ability to perform repetitive body movements such as bending or stooping. As well as joint flexibility and fine motor skills are essential.

5. Ability to comprehend technical medical terminology. Ability to visually scan and proof information that has been entered into the chart/computer. Ability to accurately and efficiently enter appropriate data into the patient medical record. Ability to communicate with nursing, support services, patient/family, and with physicians and physician's offices via the telephone.

6. Works in patient care environment and may be exposed to infectious diseases and certain unpleasant patient care activities.
