PURPOSE OF POSITION:

• The Bakery Clerk is responsible for waiting on and servicing custo m ers at the Bakery service counter. He/she is responsible for following the custo m er satisfaction behaviors, to include being friendly, responsive, knowledgeable and passionate. He/she is responsible for preparing, bak i ng, and/or packaging bakery p r oduct. Product is placed on the dis p lay s helf/case for custo m er purchase, o r m ay be handed dire c tly to the cu s t omer across the counter. He/she m ust have excellent custo m er service skills, as they are

usually working one on one with cu s t o m ers. He/she m ust also fill products into the service case, self-service cases, and other display areas and m ay take down product at night. Bakery clerks prepare food products including both cold and hot foods. He/she must m aintain product quality by reviewing appearance, codes, and rotating product. He/she m ust m aintain t h e Bakery a re a in a clean/sanitary and visually appealing m anner.

ESS E NTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• W ork in a c ourteous m anner in a fa s t paced m ulti function a l environ m ent with oth e r people or alone.

• Assist in in c reasing sales by utilizing the f i ve ste p s of retail selling – Connect with the custo m er; quali f y the c u sto m er; pre s ent sol u tion s ; closing the sale and create a customer f or li f e.

• Operate Bakery department equip m ent including ovens, m i xers, slicers, and others.

• Prepare bakery product for sale to custo m er. This includes setting up product, baking, wrapping, pricing, and producing ite m s for sale, which includes repetitive m otion.

• Wait on custo m ers from behind Bakery serv i ce cases, process verbal orders (including wrapping and pricing), and deliver orders to c u st o m er from across the co u nter.

• Must work quickly and carefully while prepa r ing ite m s at a reasonable e x pectancy (R/E).

• Visually identify product and PLU code; m anu a lly enter into the labeler for pricing.

• Reading di s play ter m inal and other d ocu m ents when neces s ary.

• Taking verbal orders over the telephone and writing down pertinent infor m ation.

• Placing product into or re m oving product weigh i ng up to 40 lbs. from refrigerated cases.

• W ork sa f ely with el e ctr o nic slicing e quip m ent, ovens, m i xers, and other Bakery related m achinery.


ESS E NTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (cont’d):

• Replenishing product from the prep area to the display shelf/case/table.

• Lift and load 5-40 lb cases onto stock carts and push or pull cart to prep area.

• Work in a war m /cool/cold environ m ent.

• Interact and communicate with others in a courteous and professional m a nner including greeting and thanking custo m ers.

• Deal with s o m e potentially di ff i cult s itu a tions (such as diss a tisfied custo m ers).

ADD I TIONAL JOB F UNCTIONS:

• Perform cake-dec o rating and cream case functio n s.

• Preparing s p ecial custo m er req u ests such as cakes or platters.

• Lift and load product w eighing up to 50 lbs.

• Storage of s upplies and m aterials fr o m receiving area to prep area.

• Sweep, clean up, and sanitize works t ation as assigned by supervisor.

• Cleaning and sanitizing equip m ent, utensils, and other supply ite m s.

• Clean dis p lay cases and fill supplies when needed.

• Other duties as assigned.

ASSIGNMENT, REV I EW, A N D APPROVAL OF WORK:

• The Bakery Manager or Asst. Bakery Manager generally assigns the work.

• Bakery clerk should review and get approval from his/her supervisor prior to perfor m i ng any work that was not previously assigned.

• The Bakery Manager generally prepares work schedules on a weekly basis.

RESPONS I BILITY AND DECI S ION MAKING AUT H O RITY:

• Responsible to wait on the custo m er and provide good custo m er service including suggestive selling.

• Bakery clerks should make sure the custo m er gets exactly w hat they want (show custo m er types of cake s , etc.).

• Bakery clerks are not to leave their assign m ent without n o tifying the supervisor on duty.

• Responsible for knowing and understanding all Bakery specific policies and procedures.

• Responsible for performing their work in a safe and ergono m ically correct m anner.

• Any unsafe working conditions m ust be repo r ted to the supervisor on duty im m ediately.

RELATIONS WITH OTHERS:

• Must be a b le to r e late to the f ollowing in a courteous and professional m a nner:

o Custo m ers

o Supervisors

o Co-workers

o Store Manage m ent

o Vendors

o Other people with whom they have contact while on duty


KNOWLEDGE AND BACKGROUND R E QUIRED:

• Must be at least 18 years old.

• Excelle n t c u sto m er service skills.

• On the job training is provided.

KNOWLEDGE AND BACKGROUND D E SIRED:

• Prior food handling experience.

• Ability to work quic k ly and accurat e ly.

• High school graduate or curr e ntly enrolled in school.

WORKING CONDI T IONS:

• Stores are usually open 7 days a week.

• Part ti m e associates usually w o rk between 8 and 36 hours a week.

• Full ti m e associates usually work 40 hours a week.

• So m e bakery duties m ay involve overnight work.

• Retail store conditions are generally dry with m o derate te m perature.

• Bakery conditions m ay vary from warm to hot.

• Bakery clerk requires the per f or m ance of repetitive tasks.

• Cooler conditions m ay be wet or dry, and usually cold.

• Freez e r co n ditions are u sually v ery c old.

• A hair restraint m ust be worn at all ti m es.

• Associates in the Bakery are usually scheduled according to peak custo m er ti m es.

GENERAL:

• This m ay be a part ti m e or full ti m e position.

• This is considered an entry-level position.

• Food safety awareness is required in this position.

MISCELLANEOUS:
