Position Summary: Respiratory therapists here are part of a multi-disciplinary team and participate in patient care decisions and rounding. Mankato has an ICU, level two trauma center, pulmonary rehabilitation, pulmonary function testing, labor and delivery, level two nursery, and also assess/treat patients in general care. Mankato has 166 beds and performs over 3,000 in patient surgeries and over 4,000 outpatient surgeries on a yearly basis. We are looking for individuals that are self-motivated, desire quality patient care and work well in a team environment.

We have positions open for 12 hour shifts, 3 days a week, rotating day/night or all night shifts. Most shifts will be in Mankato, with a couple of shifts in a 12 week period in Fairmont or New Prague. Both Fairmont and New Prague are critical access hospitals where we provide respiratory support with: temporary invasive or non-invasive ventilation, cpap, pulmonary function testing, oxygen support, nebulizer treatments, pulmonary rehab, and EKGs. We have a great team of individuals that we work with. Staff here are very team oriented and place the needs of the patient first.

Responsibilities: Deliver care to patient in a variety of settings. Assess, recommend and evaluate course of care following departmental policies and procedures as demonstrated by completing self-evaluation tool identifying areas of strengths and areas for improvement. Exceed Standards: Complete a written plan of action to demonstrate achievement of goals in clinical areas of responsibility agreed upon by the manager. Perform respiratory care procedures assuring indications for care, appropriate cost-effective measures are implemented and on-going plan of care is evaluated on each patient interaction. Documentation reflects intervention, and plan of care is addressed following accepted practices. Self-evaluation tool will reflect annual competencies required by the practitioner. Exceed Standards: Become proficient in a special procedure such as pulmonary function, sleep studies, bronchoscopy, cath lab, or another specialty service. Institute and monitor artificial airway care and ventilation according to policies and procedures with emphasis on response to emergent situations in an appropriate response clinically and professionally. Exceed Standards: Is consistently complimented by other members of the health care team on their contribution, expertise, and recommendations as judged by the Manager. Prioritize and use clinical judgement to complete the work of each assigned shift by meeting the needs of the shift as judged by your Manager and co-workers. Exceed Standards: Consistently anticipate the need of the other shifts if your work is completed. Communicate with health care delivery team to promote care and service of patient interactions. Performing as an active member of the respiratory care team as evidenced by completing assigned responsibilities from the yearly work plan for the department as measured by your peers and Manager. Exceed: Receive positive feedback from Nurses/Physicians regarding care of the patient. Complete and receive timely and meaningful feedback from co-workers as evidenced by completion of annual evaluations. Address concerns with co-workers and Manager in a timely fashion. Exceed: Volunteer to educate Nurses when needed. Complete and receive timely feedback from Medical directors as evidenced by completion of annual evaluations. Formulate a plan of action for improvement and/or continued relationship building with the medical staff. Exceed: Participate in at least two patient care activities--Smoking cessation, Asthma Support or Pulmonary Rehab. Accept and accurately transcribe verbal orders for respiratory care procedures from physicians upon attainment of state licensure or minimum of certified respiratory therapist (CRTT) credentials. Communicate pertinent data to the next shift. Participate as a team member in development of Clinical services and roles. Participate in assigned responsibilities related to patient care and improvement such as case study presentations and support groups. Assist with teaching of other health care professionals, promotion through other organizations, or working on a team project. Exceed Standard: Develop at least one suggested role or service outside of the current accepted practice within the department agreeable to management. Participate in quality assurance program as demonstrated by creating criteria for evaluation and reviewing work and/or respiratory care unit plans. Exceed: Volunteer to work in Interdisciplinary Group to affect patient outcomes. Provide administrative support to respiratory care services. Order special products after assurance to meet cost/quality standards. Provide guidance to other members of the department when needed. When assigned, work on specially assigned projects. Performs pulmonary function testing on patients requested by their ordering physician. Performs spirometry, diffusion capacity, total lung volumes, and methacholine challenges on patients when ordered by their physician. Understands physician orders and assesses the need for further tests and takes appropriate action to clarify orders. Performs bedside pulmonary function testing. Understands the indications for bronchodilators. Explains test results to patients undergoing the procedure. Initiates file for interpretation by physicians when test is completed. Perform calibration, quality control, and preventive maintenance on pulmonary function equipment. Calibration of equipment is required before each test according to policy and procedure. Quality control procedures are maintained and recorded according to policy and procedure. Preventative maintenance is performed according to policy and procedure. Maintains supply inventory in the pulmonary function lab. A schedule of ordering supplies and equipment is maintained and updated when requested. Measures of cost effective ordering and stocking are applied working with the materials management department. Participates in the overall development and improvement of the services offered. Develops in conjunction with the Clinical specialist, a plan for the overall development of the lab working collaboratively with the Medical Directors. Assists in budget preparation for annual capitalized and budgetary line items in the departmental budget. Assists in the continuous quality improvement process for the pulmonary function lab assuring service is patient focused and quality driven.

Qualifications: Graduate from an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy. Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy or healthcare related field is preferred. Previous hospital experience preferred.

Additional Qualifications: Good verbal and written communication skills required. Function with initiative and independent judgment. Desire for continuous quality improvement. Basic computer literacy required.

Compensation Detail: Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $25.07 per hour.
