Position Purpose:

The Physician Assistant is a health care provider who, working collaboratively with the physicians in the practice, is responsible for providing care to both well and ill patients. This individual educates patients and/or their families in order to promote wellness, prevent health problems, maintain current health and intervene in acute or chronic illness.

Job Description Details:

Essential Duties

1 Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.

2 Outpatients - Conducts patient evaluations and examinations during office visits including obtaining medical histories, assessing risks for surgery and preparing patients to see the physician. Administers treatment when necessary. Performs post surgical wound checks and removes sutures/staples. Manages follow up care post-operatively. Evaluates patients to ensure they are prepared for their surgical procedure including performing pre-operative physicals and testing to assure cases can be scheduled efficiently. Performs peer-to-peer for insurance companies so that our patients can receive required testing or surgical procedures. Works with the pharmacy to have medication approved (when non-formulary medication is required for the patient) per the surgeon. This requires the PA to provide the insurance company with documents on the drug, provide doses and discuss similar medications that may be on their formulary, discuss the indications, precautions and contraindications for this medication.

3 In-patients - First assistant in surgery. Rounding on all patients that physicians have requested a consult including trauma, elective and referred patients, which also includes the patients on the neurosurgical service. Examining patients, ordering tests and communicating findings and recommendations to the surgeons. Communicating with the medical specialists, case managers and rehabilitation facilities to assure optimal outcomes clinically. Provides support to patients and their families by explaining procedures, answering questions, following up with them post-operatively and otherwise helping them navigate the system to assure the best outcome. Performs designated procedures independently.

4 Patient education.

5 Other duties as needed and assigned by the manager.
