About this job

Provides direct patient care to patients using the nursing process in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice.

Reports to: Director of ACU

FLSA: Non-exempt

Essential Functions

Performs plan of care intervention, including medication administration, specimen collection, clinical treatments, as well as other medical care treatment.

Documents patient care given.

Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to care team, physician, patient, and family.

Assists patients with performing activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.

Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.

Evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.

Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.

Follows established policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.

Willing and able to demonstrate appropriate core competencies annually or as requested.

Completes a comprehensive assessment of patients' acute and chronic health problems.

Formulates a nursing diagnosis from assessment of patient's acute and chronic health problems.

Completes a written care plan for assigned patients and reviews and revises according to established nursing guidelines.

Provides the daily care of each patient assigned with the written care plan.

Demonstrates knowledge based in areas of, but not limited to, standards of care, practice and professional performance, policies and procedures, medications, lab values and legal issues.

Serves on hospital committees and/or participates in Q1 activities as directed by the Department Manager or designee.

Demonstrates self-directed learning and participates in continuing education; attends scheduled meetings.

Demonstrates awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for personal professional growth.

Assists with orientation of new employees and staff development activities for the new unit.

Demonstrates knowledge of I.V. Therapy.

Demonstrates knowledge of aseptic technique while performing procedures/obtaining lab specimens.

Demonstrates understanding and maintenance of standard precautions and isolation techniques.

Demonstrates skills in performance of pre and/or post operative procedures.

Demonstrates knowledge regarding wound and skin care.

Demonstrates knowledge of patient care needs regarding the adolescent and/or adult patient (13 years and older).

Demonstrates knowledge of patient care needs of the geriatric patient.

Demonstrates knowledge of patient care needs regarding pediatric patient (0-12 years of age).

Demonstrates skills and knowledge of patient care needs regarding critical care patient.

Responsible for assuring monitors are completed as assigned.

Abides by Nursing Service Behavior Standards.

Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

Support the culture of service excellence throughout the organization.

Actively seek ways to demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and participate in professional development opportunities.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Completes annual educational requirements.

Tasks to be performed when staff RN is assigned Charge function on a given shift:

Individual assigned to charge is responsible to assess, plan, direct and evaluate the delivery of care to all patients in the following areas:

Utilizing the acuity classification system assess the number and skill level of personnel needed to provide quality patient care in the department for the upcoming shift.

Assess the efficiency and effectiveness of care provided on assigned shift and identifies problems with recommendations for improvement.

Directs/supervises others in the planning of patient care.

Facilitates all admissions and discharges of patients to the unit.

Effectively directs staff during any emergency situation.

Non-Essential Functions

Job Requirements

Minimum Education

Current license to practice as an RN in the State of Michigan or graduate nurse with a valid temporary license.

Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
