We are a gourmet health food stores located in downtown New Haven is looking for an experienced, reliable and hard-working Maitre d' with leadership experience to help over-see our Elm City Kitchen area of our market with daily operations, product inventory and ordering, training and maintaining of sanitation standards. Excellent customer service skills are necessary. This person must have a passion for food and be natural team-oriented leader who will be working side-by-side with the rest of the bakery, deli, cheese and kitchen staff and will be able to take charge when the Executive Chef is not around.Purpose:The Maitre d' position is a key component in the management team at our market. The Maitre d' ensures excellent customer service and provides support in the areas of scheduling, product management, employee supervision, and safety. The Maitre d' reports directly to the Store Manager. The Maitre d' is responsible for overseeing/managing the prepared foods, deli + bakery in its entirety.Work Environment:This position works in both an office and a kitchen environment. Interaction with staff and customers on the operations floor will be a daily occurrence. This may include hot or cold temperatures, warehouse environments, and exposure to open food, raw meats, and sharp cooking tools.Requirements:* At least 3 years work experience within the food service industry in a leadership role.* At least 3 years work experience managing others.* An interest in natural foods and knowledge of natural foods and special diets.* Proficiency in Microsoft Office.* Experience executing goals, effectively creating change, and increasing efficiency.* The ability to exercise considerable discretion and judgment consistent with the essential functions of the job.* Improves quality results by studying, evaluating, and re-designing processes; implementing changes; maintaining and improving the appearance of the respected area that you're focused on.* Build a positive work environment of outstanding teamwork, mutual respect, and exceptional morale. Select, train, develop, mentor, motivate and counsel staff in a manner that builds and sustains a high-performance team and minimizes turnover. * A strong work history demonstrating the principles and practices of management and supervision.* Ability to lift 50 pounds safely.* Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed* Excellent verbal and written communication skills * Possesses a high energy, enthusiastic attitude, and displays an affinity for our products, core values, and company philosophy* Strong organizational skills * Ability to prioritize and delegate tasks effectively Responsibilities:* Customer Service* Role model excellent customer service for staff and provide excellent internal service to staff and peers.* They must follow all inventory control procedures to maximize product freshness, quality, turnover, and availability for maximum sales.* Takes phone calls that are directly for Elm City Kitchen. * Handle all aspects of catering orders with support from the executive chef.* Ensure that all outside sales (catering) are executed with perfection* Practice courteous and proper phone etiquette when answering pages and phone calls. * Monitor product quality and freshness and ensure proper rotation or product.* Set pricing to meet margin goals; mark-down items as needed to reduce losses.* Update price and product changes in POS system as back-up to IT team.* Maintain department waste/transfer logs with other staff members.* Ensure the product mix meets varied customer dietary needs and requests.* Facilitate all catering orders, phone breakfast/lunch/dinner orders and follow through to make sure they are completed and the customer is satisfied.* Educates customers by presenting and explaining the coffee drink menu; answering questions about beverage bar, bakery department and grab and go + deli department.* Provide a pleasant shopping experience for all customers and respond to customer requests in a timely fashion.* Ensure that department employees provide excellent customer service and receive appropriate customer service training.* Offer product samples + suggestions to customers in a friendly outgoing manner.Personnel Management* Actively address performance and personnel issues in a timely manner.* Ensure adherence to company policies.* Represent the Elm City Market brand by exemplifying Elm City Market standards.Safety:* Ensure compliance with safety practices and procedures, both throughout the store and within the department.* Communicate with Store Manager regarding equipment issues and concerns.* Develop a culture of safety among employees.* Ensure appropriate safety training for all department staff.Training:* Identify locations where increased training is necessary and act to improve development in that area.* Make training recommendations to the Store Manager as necessary.* Ensure that all staff is thoroughly trained for the position they are filling.Merchandising* Plan attractive displays.* Strategize with departmental employees on ways to add value to product displays, focus on seasonal products, and assure there is always enough product out for customers.* Help assist in development/suggest menus reflective of food seasonality and customer preference.* Make sure cafe area is always neat and fully stocked.* Support the Store Manager as needed.Always have Elm City Market's best interest in mind.
