Job Summary

Purpose and Scope:

Incumbent is skilled in operating heavy equipment used in engineering, construction, repair, and maintenance projects. Heavy equipment includes but is not limited to, excavators, cranes, clamshells, power shovels, motor graders, heavy loaders, carryalls, bulldozers, rollers, scrapers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scrapper attachments, machines for breaking ground and

digging.

Essential Responsibilities:

1) Perform pre-operation inspections of equipment, refuel trucks and add fluids as needed

2) Ensure compliance with policies, safety and maintenance procedures

3) Excavate, load, or move and distribute dirt, gravel, or other construction materials.

4) Excavate or stockpile material on unimproved/improved roadways, drill pads, event sites, and construction sites

5) Compile daily reports as required by applicable permitting standards

6) Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications

7) Operate machines to spread, smooth, level, or steel-reinforce stone, concrete, or asphalt on road beds

8) Control paving machines to push dump trucks and to maintain a constant flow of asphalt or other material into hoppers or screeds

9) Operate oil distributors, loaders, chip spreaders, dump trucks, and snow plows.

10) Participate in snow removal operations to remove snow, ice from roads, parking lots, airfields and taxiways

11) Operate excavator equipment at industrial landfills following State landfill permit requirements

12) Rips rock, cuts slopes, pushes scrapers, and digs sumps

13) Feeds crushers or batch plants; removes aggregate from under conveyor belts

14) Ensure plant machinery is maintained properly and fluid levels are adequate

15) Read and interpret grade and slope stakes and simple plans, and may grease, adjust and make minor emergency repairs to equipment

Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Position is represented by a Union Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Two years of experience as an Equipment Operator or completion of recognized apprenticeship program. Possess journeyman status. Must receive Hazardous Materials Handling within 90 days of hiring and every two years thereafter. Must possess a Class AB Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Hazardous Materials endorsement. Must be physically qualified in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Must be able to pass a driver skills test by CDL standards. Possess an active government Top Secret Security Clearance. Possess a valid state issued driver's license.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Work is mainly performed outdoors in all types of weather, and operator may be exposed to extremes of climate and temperatures. Operator will also work in a shop environment that is moderately lighted, heated and ventilated, is exposed to disagreeable fumes and to cuts and bruises from using tools in close placed and hazards of moving vehicles such as forklifts and sweepers in shop area. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. Frequently lifts items weighing 40-45 pounds and occasionally in excess of 50 pounds. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme heat, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, or may include unsafe conditions, questioning nonstandard operations or environmental factors that may involve unmitigated hazards, and providing feedback to supervisors and managers on all safety issues.
