Medical Surgical/ Observation/ Telemetry Overflow- Total of 36 beds Within Unit

Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, AZ offers a wonderful culture within a Magnet Recognized Hospital. The Medical Surgical portion of the unit has 12 beds. The unit is designed to provide specialized care for adult patients with medical diagnoses including abdominal pain, cellulitis, pulmonary diagnoses, peritoneal dialysis, renal failure, diabetes. Patients on this unit may be monitored remotely if they have a cardiac history but do not require specialized cardiac interventions. Tele-health services provide remote 24-hour patient surveillance in every room. A Resource Nurse assists the unit with patient care and post-Discharge phone calls 12 hours/day.

The Observation portion (3 East) has 12 beds designation for Observation, and 12 additional beds for either Med/Surgical patients, telemetry overflow or additional Observation beds as the need arises (total of 24 beds). This unit provides care to medical surgical patients, along with gynecological, urological, and minor abdominal surgeries post operatively. It also provides for care of the mild Diabetic Ketoacidosis population on insulin drips and overflow telemetry patients that may require a cardiac drip temporarily. An RN assists 12 hours /day with high patient turnover by providing information and discharge instructions to patients, especially patients under Observation status.

The patient's rooms are all private, spacious and equipped with computer stations just outside the door. The workstation outside the patient's door contains a window into the room. This set up helps nursing staff with two things, real time documentation as well as direct patient observation as needed. There is a RN Manager on 24/7.

Job Summary

This position provides routine patient care to promote patient comfort and contribute to the overall patient plan of care. This position is responsible for on-going patient data collection and documentation in the medical record; provides a variety of unit support functions which contribute to the overall efficient operation of the nursing unit/department.

Essential Functions

* Provides assistance in activities of daily living and completes necessary tasks to promote patient health, including assisting patients with basic hygiene needs, maintaining an optimum level of mobility and assisting patients with nutritional intake, as needed.

* Collects patient specimens and data, including vital signs, input/output and other delegated measurements in accordance with unit/facility policy and standards of care. Documents objective data and routine aspects of patient care. Assists in the transportation of patient specimens.

* Recognizes and reports abnormalities and/or changes in the patients health status and responses to treatment to a licensed professional. Promotes continuity of care by accurately and completely communicating to other caregivers the status of patients for which care is provided.

* Performs procedures and uses equipment as delegated by a licensed professional, consistent with demonstrated competencies and state scope of practice; procedures may include blood draws, foley catheter removal, EKGs, and EKG monitoring. Provides necessary supplies, support and assistance to medical staff and patients for unit specific procedures, under the direct supervision of a licensed professional.

* Maintains a clean, orderly and well-stocked environment.

* May provide general support to the department, including greeting and assisting patients, visitors, physicians, and ancillary personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.

Current BLS certification. In Arizona: Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) in state of practice is required for new hires and transfers. All existing incumbents must also obtain the LNA by the earliest of either their renewal date or 12/31/18 (includes an extended deadline to 12/31/19 for Tucson only). Outside of Arizona: Current Certified Nursing Assistant in state of practice is required.

Must possess excellent organizational skills, as well as effective human relations and communication skills. Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy and keyboarding skills is required.

Depending on department assignment, receive a minimum passing score of 85% on ECG or EEG test with accurate identification of all lethal cardiac dysrhythmias and epileptiform activity is required. Successful completion of either a unit approved basic electrocardiogram interpretation course or electroencephalographic interpretation course, or on the job training is also required.

Preferred Qualifications

Recent healthcare experience preferred.

Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
