Southern Cross has immediate openings for Gas Field Services Technicians qualified and experienced in Gas Meter Set Change-out, Turn-on, Relight, Integrity Testing, Valve Inspection, Leak Survey and Leak Investigation. About Southern Cross Southern Cross is a highly respected company that has continuously provided field services and equipment for utilities since 1946 (70 Years).

Our services include: Natural gas pipeline safety inspections such as Gas Leakage Surveys, Valve Inspections, Cathodic Projection system testing, Atmospheric Corrosion Inspections and Mitigation and Pipeline Marker Inspection, Maintenance and Installation. Utility Meter Services such as gas, electric and water AMR / AMI implementation and maintenance, meter reading, meter exchange and service turn-off / turn-on. Scheduling and monitoring for compliance and efficiency.

Gas Field Services Technician Primary Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Manage daily assigned tasks for safety, quality and efficiency to exceed customer expectations.
  • Schedule and plan work efficiently.
  • Follow all safety rules.
  • Follow organizational policies and procedures.
  •  Keep Operator Qualification current.
  • Interact with the public, client’s customers and client’s personnel professionally, respectfully and cordially.
  • Accurately complete task reports and work related reports timely.
  • Protect, inspect and maintain assigned equipment and vehicle.
  • Successfully specified Operator Qualification training and testing pertaining to the meter work, integrity testing, relights/turn-ons, inspections, red tagging, leak investigation etc. at the Client’s Learning Center
  • Meter Exchanges:* Instruct the customer, building owner or manager to turn off all appliances, e.g., lower thermostat, turn off burners on stove, etc. Advise customers not to use gas. Verify the meter number and part supplied. Check for abnormal conditions. Observe the meter dial to be sure gas is not being used. Record readings on both old and new meters.*
  • Change out the meter in accordance with Client’s specifications. If tampering is suspected, notify a Client supervisor immediately.
  • Meter will be handled as set forth in Client’s training module “Gas meter mishandling.” service center.*
  • Integrity Test: Perform an integrity test in accordance with Client’s standards and training preceding the relighting process. If tampering is suspected, notify a Client supervisor immediately. The test shall be performed either by the meter dial test or using a manometer (U – gauge) in accordance with Client’s procedures. If the test fails, shut off, lock the meter or appropriate valve and attach a warning (red) tag as outlined in Client’s procedures. *
  • Relights: After completing the integrity test, the Technician can relight appliances as specified in the Client’.
  • Periodic Inspections: * Performed as directed by the Client. Periodic Inspections include Vault Inspections, Building of Public Assembly Inspections, Main Valve Inspections and High-Pressure Service Regulator Inspections. High-pressure service regulator inspections will also be required on all meter exchanges for elevated pressure delivery customers. *
  • Gas Leak Response, Surveillance and Follow Up/Recheck: Respond to gas leak calls, either inside or outside gas leaks in accordance with Client’s procedures. Perform gas leak surveillance and follow up/recheck as required by Client’s specifications.
  • Investigate gas leaks found while performing other tasks (i.e. main valve inspections, BOPA inspections, meter installations, gas turn-ons, etc.).

Education and Experience :

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Gas Utility Inspections performing duties and responsibilities outline above.
  • Or Equivalent academic education and experience

Skills:

  • Computer or Smart Phone literate
  • Read maps and navigate congested areas in large cities
  • Adept using hand tools and equipment

Requirements:

  • Must pass required drug test and criminal background check.
  • Must have a good driving record and hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Good vision with or without correction.
  • Physically able to bend, squat and move heavy objects and use a pipe wrench and other hand tools and to lift and reach overhead.

Compensation:
Equivalent to training, knowledge and experience for the area.
