Job Overview:

Under general supervision, perform day in day out database administration tasks for one or more of the following database management systems: Oracle, DB2-ZOS, DB2-LUW, SQL*Server, Teradata, Cassandra, NOSQL. Technical contributor in the infrastructure Cassandra and Spark Apache team with focus on Datastax suite of products and Chef/Ansible Automation DevOps technologies. Works within the project guidelines to analyze a wide variety of infrastructure requirements and assist in designing appropriate solutions. Roles and responsibilities include installation and administration of the database stack, providing technical guidance and play a lead role in implementation of stable and performing databases for Infrastructure customers. Responsibilities also include training and leading the team and projects from a technical aspect, help in interviewing and technical evaluation of new candidates that may join the team. Focus is around a lead technical role that encompasses all aspects of database administration including backup and recovery, high availability, DR and clustered solutions.

Essential Functions:

• Install database server and software, patch and upgrade binaries. Monitor databases for performance and stability. Design and Develop processes for alerting and monitoring. Key responsibility also includes design and implementation of security and encryption/PCI compliance for sensitive data.
• Design and develop back and restore strategy, policies and procedures. Tune database and application SQL from infrastructure perspective. Maintain audit and SOX compliance of databases supported by the team and documentation for the same.
• Deliver assignments by established deadlines. Keep management well-informed on a timely basis of progress, status and/or concerns for each assignment.
• Play lead technical role and guide DBA team in respect of technology. Monitor Cassandra infrastructure for performance, high availability, and stability. Interfaces with other systems and infrastructure performance and stability in general.
• Support On-Call; document processes and prepare/generate presentations/reports as required from management or customer.
• Consistently demonstrates regular, dependable attendance & punctuality.
• Innovate/automate processes and support functions that improve customer service, infrastructure delivery and operational support for solutions leveraging Datastax products.
• Support Datastax/ Apache Cassandra/ Spark/ Solr products in production and non-production distributed hybrid cloud environments.
• Manage upgrades/maintenance of Datastax products in various environments – includes coordination and planning with application teams.
• Participates in meetings, committees and conferences related to technical issues.

Decision Making:

• Makes sound decisions in a timely manner and assumes responsibility for these decisions. Must be able to assist and/or lead in the evaluation and recommendation of industry standard hardware and software for Macy’s Technology use.
• Decision making responsibilities for the position include day-to-day operational decisions, effective strategic decision-making to support business and customers. Decisions include design and implementation of a stable, secure, performing infrastructure for the application/customer; design High Availability, Backup/restore/DR, Clustered solutions that interact seamlessly with other homogenous and heterogeneous platforms using links, replication products and/or related technology.

• Able to lead and mentor juniors/peers as necessary.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree (preferably with Computer Science or Mathematics major) and 8+ years of managing critical production databases experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least 8 to 10 years of solid hands on experience on database management with experience in installation, administration and performance tuning of the database stack.
• Have 8+ years of combined experience administering or developing solutions on Cassandra/MongoDB/Spark/SOLR/Oracle/MySQL.
• Possess strong analysis/scripting using Ruby/Shell/Python and troubleshooting skills on these core products and presentation skills leveraging Office365.
• Familiar with CQL queries and JVM tuning and Cassandra data modelling is required.
• Additional experience to Ansible/Chef and other automation configuration management tools is required, and experience to open source products (Elastic Search, Kibana, Jenkins), and cloud technology is a plus.
• Moderate knowledge of operating systems, network, security, and storage platform is required.
• Development experience using scripts, programming languages with moderate experience in Perl, Python, Ruby, Shell Scripting is a must requirement.
• Must have expert database monitoring and tuning skills and apply these skills to optimize the database.
• Must be able to convey highly technical database concepts to DBAs as well and non-DBAs
• Familiarity with web based tools as required to communicate with vendor for incidents and troubleshooting is also required. Microsoft Office proficiency is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Projects and Visio is a plus.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to read, write, and interpret business and technical documents.
• Good communication skills are required for this lead technical role.

• Must be able to think logically and use facts to back decisions.
• Strong analysis/troubleshooting/debugging skills, strong partnering/relationship building skills.
• Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Physical Demands:

• This position involves regular ambulating, sitting, hearing, and talking.
• May occasionally involve stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
• May involve close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
• Involve use of hands and fingers for typing on keyboard and using a mouse.
• May be a need to move or lift items under 10 pounds.

Work Hours:

• Ability to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
• Participates in the ‘on-call’ rotation.
