A glimpse at the job:
The culinary areas of Wegmans stores are responsible for creating restaurant-quality prepared foods. Employees work hands on with the finest ingredients to produce the core recipes our customers have come to know and love.  Because of the skills and passion of our culinary professionals we are able to make great meals easy for our customers; offering meal solutions and suggestions for completing their menus.

Culinary areas include:  Asian Bar, Fresh Food Bar, Kitchen (Prepared Foods case), Packaging Room, and Sushi

Prep Cooks (Cook III) have a passion for preparing food as well as desire to develop their skills and talents in the kitchen.  They play an integral role in preparing ingredients and core recipes; and ensuring customers are provided incredible service and access to products throughout the day.

What abilities must I bring to the table to be considered:

  • In addition to Incredible Customer Service, successful applicants will possess one or more of the following:
  • Experience working as a pantry cook/apprentice cook
  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Culinary Arts
  • Customer service experience preferably in food service, restaurant, grocery or retail setting.
  • Possess culinary knife skills which include safely using knives, sharpening and honing the edges or knives and using them to chop, dice, julienne and mince.
  • Potential related experiences:  Line Cook, Prep Cook, Grill Cook, Station Cook, Short-order Cook, Fry Cook, Pantry Cook

Line Cooks (Cook II) create menu items and ensure guests are presented with a meal they can’t receive elsewhere.  In this position, they use a passion for preparing food to develop the skills and talents needed for success in a restaurant setting, while providing incredible service to our customer throughout the day.

What abilities must I bring to the table to be considered:

  • In addition to Incredible Customer Service, successful applicants will possess one or more of the following:
  • Experience working as a prep cook, line cook or apprentice cook
  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Culinary Arts
  • Learn, use and be able to explain proper cooking techniques
  • Customer service experience preferably in food service, restaurant, grocery or retail setting
  • Possess culinary knife skills which include safely using knives, sharpening and honing the edges of knives; and using them to chop, dice, julienne and mince
  • Potential related experiences: Prep Cook, Grill Cook, Station cook, Short-Order Cook, Fry Cook, Pantry Cook

Lead Cooks (Cook I) work closely with Executive Chefs and Sous Chefs to oversee a Culinary area of the store.  They are given the opportunity to work hands on developing the food passion and skills of employees, display their expertise in culinary arts while producing great tasting food; ensure the kitchen is operating smoothly and customers are provided with incredible service.

What abilities must I bring to the table to be considered

  • In addition to Incredible Customer Service, successful applicants will possess one or more of the following:
  • Experience working as a Line Cook or Sous Chef
  • Managerial/Supervisory experience
  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Culinary Arts
  • Experience working in a multi-faceted food service facility, including restaurant, hotel, country club, conference center, casino, theme park etc.
  • Potential related experiences:  Lead Cook, Head Cook, Roundsman, Chef de Partie

Work Environment:

  • Work involves continuous interaction with customers and co-workers in a fast-paced environment
  • Typical motions include repetitive hand and arm movements, bending and reaching.
  • Responsible for moving and lifting an average of 5-20 pounds with a maximum weight lifting of 50 pounds rarely
  • May be exposed to various allergens and work environments, including temperature changes
  • Tasks will be performed using and in the proximity of coolers, ovens, stoves, and other hot equipment; cooking and kitchen utensils and equipment
  • Will be required to spend the majority of time on his or her feet and stand or walk without a break for up to 4 hours
  • In order to maintain a high standard of food safety, it is Wegmans policy that when working in Perishable or Prepared Food areas, facial ornaments & jewelry must be removed and a hair restraint must be worn (with reasonable accommodation for bona fide religious beliefs).  In addition, when using a knife or a slicer you will be required to wear a cutting glove.

Other:

  • Day/Hour Requirements:  Full Time Applicants are required to have an open availability Sunday-Saturday between the primary operating hours of 6am-Midnight, unless specified for a position/department.  Full Time employees work a minimum of 40 hours/week, in 8-hour intervals including evenings and weekends to meet business needs.  Weekend availability is required.
