What is my job:

At Wegmans, our Grocery department is the largest area of the store, housing all the products customers need to complete their meals and stock their homes with essentials. In the role of Overnight Operations Manager, you’ll use strong managerial and leadership skills to ensure the overall success of the Overnight Grocery team. With a keen eye for merchandising and a passion for putting out the best products, you’ll be responsible for everything from department financials to product levels to ensuring each employee working to meet customer and store needs. You will also oversee the operations of the store overnight, playing an essential role in addressing any concerns and maintaining our incredible customer service during these hours.

How do I make a difference?

Providing Incredible, Knowledge Based Service

  • Effectively manage the entire store during overnight operations; maintain a strong presence and involvement in every department and ensure incredible customer service is able to be provided at all times
  • Ensure priority sections of the Merchandising departments are well-maintained and fully stocked, educating team members about what items sell best for ordering and restocking purposes

Continuously Improving Results

  • Work with Overnight team members to ensure all Merchandising departments (including, but not limited to, Grocery, General Merchandise, Dairy, Frozen Foods, International Foods, Nature’s Marketplace, Health & Beauty Care, etc.) are fully stocked and well-merchandised to meet the needs of daytime operations
  • Ensure any incidents that may arise during the overnight hours are dealt with accordingly, including personnel issues, concerns with product and vendors; safely diffusing and relaying any Asset Protection (AP) issues to the Wegmans Communications Center in the absence of an AP professional
  • Supervise the work of team members to ensure the department is operating in the most efficient manner possible
  • Responsible for managing the 5 measures sales, contribution/profit, shrink, payroll, diversity, and development
  • Prioritize tasks and activities that must be completed in departments; creating production lists and delegating to team members, being sure to utilize their strengths and weaknesses
  • Take a hands-on approach in the department, completing tasks along with team members and leading by example when stocking; refilling and rotating items on shelves; walking aisles; unloading deliveries and breaking down skids
  • Maintain open lines of communication with the team members as well as store management and the day Grocery team to ensure pertinent information is shared and tasks are completed in the most efficient manner
  • Ensure employees are complying with all Wegmans standards including food safety, pricing, etc.

What skills, learnings, and experiences are required?

  • 1 year managerial experience at the Team Leader level or above, or a prior supervisory/coordination role in a work setting, professional group, service based company
  • Managerial/ supervisory experience including but not limited to, interviewing, selection, disciplinary action, employee development and managing financials
  • Demonstrate teambuilding by communicating a common purpose, empowering team members to contribute their best and selecting candidates with a variety of skills and styles for inclusion on the team. 
  • Use available resources to pursue goals and challenges with the intent of achieving results, striving for continued excellence and taking appropriate risks (Managing the 5 Measures)
  • Possess strong listening skills and hear many points of view without bias, asking clarifying questions to check for understanding
  • Practice process improvement, implements positive change and continuously looks for ways to improve work processes; separate and combine tasks into an effective workflow by maximizing resources and providing assistance when needed and supervise output ensuring high standards and quality are achieved
  • Drive knowledge based service by encouraging employees to learn about products and providing hands-on training that can be used to educate both customers and employees
  • Advise others within the organization, as well as external business partners, using relevant knowledge and skills to ensure that sound business decisions are made.
  • Have a feel for business and collaborate with others to coordinate merchandising programs and other strategies focused on meeting customer needs, inspiring others to act on the merchant vision. Analyze market area and benchmark with competition to identify unique products and services

What skills, learnings, and experiences are preferred and will set me apart?

  • Food service, grocery or retail experience
  • Grocery management experience
  • Experience ordering products, controlling inventory and/ or merchandising products
  • Experience managing or overseeing multiple departments
  • Experience working overnight hours
  • Previous position with total store management responsibilities

Work environment: 

  • Work includes walking, standing for up to 4 hours without a break, kneeling, squatting frequent heavy lifting, shelving of product, repetitive hand and arm movements, bending, and reaching, along with interaction with customers and co-workers. Work may involve exposure to and work in cold and below freezing temperatures. The average weight range of items lifted is 8-32 pounds with a maximum weight lifted greater than 50 pounds occasionally. You may receive assistance with heavy items, if available. May be exposed to various allergens (things that may cause an allergic reaction)
  • Work includes use of hand pallet jack, power pallet jack, power walkie-reach, scissors lift or WAV unit.  Wegmans certification required for use of power equipment
