The Clinical Nurse Specialist practices as an expert in the application of the nursing process and theory within a specialty area. The primary responsibility of the Clinical Nurse Specialist is to advance patient care directly in the role of expert clinical practitioner and indirectly in the roles of educator, consultant, researcher, change agent, collaborator, clinical leader, role model, and patient advocate.

A. Education: Master's degree in a CNS track from an accredited school of nursing or grandfathered in per MD BON regulations.
B. Knowledge Advanced clinical expertise in specialty area.
Research knowledge, including interpretation and application of evidenced based practice.
Advanced knowledge of education principles and practice.
Advanced computer knowledge of common software programs used for education and quality improvement activities.


C. Skills Ability to incorporate into practice advanced clinical and theoretical concepts with patients, families, nursing staff, and other disciplines.
Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem-solving.
Ability to analyze complex data and reports to synthesize and summarize information for the enhancement of quality care.
Problem-solve and appropriately confront issues.
Create a climate that fosters compassionate care, innovation, cooperation, collaboration, and teamwork.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in order to provide information to patients and health care personnel
