ABOUT THE HOSPITAL

Our facility is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm and features our own retail pet supply boutique that is open Tuesday through Saturday.  We offer our clients after hour on-call services for emergency situations during the evenings and weekends but see less than 10 after hour cases per month on average.  Our hospital is equipped with:

About Kodiak

The City of Kodiak is located on the N.E. end of Kodiak Island approx. 250 miles S.W. of Anchorage with travel to the mainland available via Alaska Airlines (brief 50 minute plane ride) or via the Alaska Marine Highway System (ferry service) to the City of Homer on the Kenai Peninsula.  The island population ranges from roughly 13,000 permanent residents up to 15,000 in summertime.  Kodiak offers great schools with a brand new state of the art High School recently built in 2014.  Shopping options include a mixture of big box stores including Walmart and Safeway, plus a host of local favorites including Spenard Builders Supply, Sutliff's Tru-Value Hardware, Kodiak Marine Supply, and more.  The City features an Olympic style indoor swimming pool, new public library, and a well-supported civic arts program and senior center.  Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center provides full medical services for island residents, with several eye care and dental providers on island as well.  There are 5 native villages located around the island accessible only by boat or plane, along with the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge that takes up almost 2/3's of the islands land mass.  Kodiak is home to the world famous Kodiak Brown Bear, boasting a population of over 3,000 bears (or almost 1 for every square mile of island!).  Wildlife abounds with bears, bald eagles, fox, black tail deer, a multitude of other birds, whales, dolphins, and more!  For entertainment opportunities, there is a movie theater, auditorium for concerts and plays, many delicious restaurants, and even a 9-hole golf course.

Job Summary

In addition to the responsibilities outlined below, the Associate Veterinarian is an invaluable member of the hospital team who works directly with a Managing Doctor and supporting medical staff. This individual advances the quality of medicine in the practice and provides exceptional client service to our clients and patients.

Job Responsibilities

  • Builds rapport with clients by gathering information and listening to, and empathizing with their concerns
  • Performs physical examinations and diagnostic/medical/surgical/dental procedures that deliver the highest quality care while minimizing patient stress and discomfort. 
  • Communicates with clients on topics such as pet diagnosis, treatment plans, preventive health care, and nutritional needs.
  • Maintains client/patient medical/surgical records and makes certain all necessary logs are kept up-to-date through established protocols.
  • Stays current on new medical information and changes in veterinary medicine.
  • Assists in the development of the paraprofessional team to ensure delivery of the highest quality care and exceptional client service. 
  • Presents a positive image of the hospital in the professional community and to the general public.

Skills and Basic Qualifications

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or related degree from an accredited university.
  • Licensure in good standing to practice in the state in which applicant is to be employed.
  • Commitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine and upholding veterinary code of ethics.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Works collaboratively with hospital team members.
  • Makes decisions confidently and effectively.
  • Manages time and tasks appropriately.
  • Models a professional and courteous manner with staff and clients.
  • Commitment to ongoing educational development and growth
