Summary:Processes updates and corrections to patient insurance and demographic information.
Position Qualifications:High School graduate or equivalent. Requires the ability to use specialized applications software and computer systems for patient registration, and a basic knowledge of business office procedures, as well as a basic knowledge of medical terminology, third party payer billing and managed care requirements and procedures. Requires at least 1 year of related experience.
Major Responsibilities:Receives and greets patients and directs them to appropriate offices following established procedures. May escort patients to treatment areas. Maintains an awareness of waiting room activities, provides requested information to patients and other visitors.
Obtains, and enters into the computer-based patient registration/scheduling system, demographic, insurance, and other related patient information.
Obtains signatures of consent from patient or guardian for treatment and insurance/billing information.
Verifies patient insurance coverage and follows guidelines established by insurers to ensure that pre-authorization, pre-certification, and physician referrals for treatment are obtained prior to patient visits. Follows up to correct discrepancies as required.
Tracks referrals and ensures that records of consultations have been returned to the primary care provider.
Receives and triages patient phone calls to appropriate providers as in emergency situations and/or their need for medical advice.
Assesses patients needs for basic ancillary services, such as financial counseling, interpreter services, etc., and refers to appropriate person or area.
Telephones and/or notifies patient of appointment times. Provides patient with standard information regarding their personal preparation for their inpatient stay or for outpatient medical procedures. May mail patient information packets to patients.
Receives and relays patient phone calls to appropriate personnel.
Posts charges for all visit types and prepares charts for coding.
Maintains accurate and timely records, logs, charges, files, and related information as required.
Maintains medical records for efficient access and retrieval according to established procedures. Performs a variety of related clerical duties, such as retrieving medical and other records, faxing, collating, typing, taking and relaying messages, etc.
Recommends improvements in systems and procedures.
Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
Attends variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed.
Demonstrates use of quality improvement in daily operations.
Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes in maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
