Food & Beverage Manager

Courtyard Marriott by Marriott Boston Downtown - North End


Lead our newest Select Service hotel located in Boston as a part of the Grand Opening Team. We are currently seeking a Food and Beverage Manager for the opening of the Courtyard by Marriott Boston Downtown North End. Set to open in early 2018, the hotel will be known for its chic, urban design and decor with a sophisticated metropolitan flare. The 14-story, 220 guest room property, with 2500 sq. ft. of meeting space will be conveniently situated within walking distance of The TD Garden Arena (home of the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins), Bostons Financial Center, and the Government Center. In addition, it will be minutes from both the Avalon North Station and Boston North Station.


Courtyard by Marriott Boston Downtown North End is part of Turnberry Associates. Turnberry Associates has built over 20 million square feet of retail space, more than 7,000 luxury condominium and condo-hotel units, 1.5 million square feet of class office space, in excess of 3,000 hotel and luxury resort rooms, as well as a number of exciting new projects currently in various phases of development.


Position is based in Boston.

Position Overview: Direct and organize the activities of the Food and Beverage Department to maintain high standards of food and beverage quality, service and merchandising to maximize hotel profitability. 


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Direct the F&B Team, by coaching, counseling, providing guidance and direction, correcting work, while motivating team to improve and maintain positive morale
  • Plan and direct the functions of administration and planning of the Food and Beverage Department to meet the daily needs of the operation
  • Clearly describe, assign and delegate responsibility and authority for the operation of the various food and beverage sub-departments, e.g. room service, restaurants, banquets, kitchens, steward, etc
  • Develop, implement and monitor schedules for the operation of all food and beverage sub-departments to achieve a profitable result
  • Creation of banquet menus designed to attract a predetermined customer market
  • Implement effective control of food, beverage and labor costs among all sub-departments to Turnberry Hospitality standards
  • Establish and achieve predetermined profit objectives and desired standards of quality food, service, cleanliness, merchandising and promotion
  • Interview, hire, train, resolve problems, provide open communication and recommend discipline and/or termination when appropriate
  • Ensure service standards are met throughout the F&B operations
  • Abide by all Local, State, Federal and Corporate requirements pertaining to serving alcoholic beverages
  • Regularly visit and walk through and visually inspect F&B areas and equipment
  • Regularly review and evaluate the degree of guest satisfaction of the individual restaurants and banquet service, to recommend new operating and marketing policies whenever declining or constant sales imply dissatisfaction by the customers, a material change in the make-up or the customer market, or a change in the competitive environment
  • Develop operating tools necessary and incidental to modern management principles, e.g. budgeting, forecasting purchase specifications, recipes, portion specifications, menu abstracts, food production control etc
  • Continuously evaluate the performance and encourage improvement of the Team Members in the food and beverage department. Plan and administer a training and development program within the department which will provide well trained Team Member at all levels
  • Resolve any guest concerns/complaints; address root issue

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

  • The employee may be expected to work in other areas of the hotel when needed to assist operations to perform job duties not necessarily contained in this job description
  • Maintain a safe work environment for co-workers and a safe hotel for guests; please refer to Section 7.0 in the Team Member Handbook for specific examples
  • Maintains strong influence within all hiring, training, performance evaluations, discipline and/or termination decisions
  • Responsible for receiving, processing and investigating complaints made per the existing harassment policy

Required Experience:

  • 4 Year College degree preferred in Hospitality or Business field
  • 3+ years of experience in hotel industry, Management and Food & Beverage area
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in wring, to respond to guest requests and give direction to co-workers
  • Knowledge of all applicable federal, state and local health and safety regulations
  • Must have comprehensive knowledge of food and beverage preparations, service standards, guest relations and etiquette
  • Ability to grasp, lift, carry or transport up to 30 pounds   
  • Ability to operate various food and beverage equipment
  • Ability to perform accurate complex mathematical calculations
  • Maintain professionalism at all times, demonstrating courtesy and respect to guests and co-workers
  • Ability to manage and resolve conflicts and multitask
  • Ability to effectively deal with internal and external customers, some of whom will require high levels of patience, tact, diplomacy to defuse anger, collect accurate information and resolve conflicts
  • Ability to move throughout all food and beverage areas and hospitality suites and continuously perform essential job functions
  • Ability to access and accurately input information using a moderately complex computer system, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Applications
  • Ability to observe and distinguish product quality by smell, taste, and appearance.
  • Able to work a flexible work schedule that includes but it is not limited to rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Food handling management certificate
  • Maintains professionalism at all times, demonstrating courtesy and respect to guests and co-workers
