Appropriate referrals can include: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pain Anesthesia, Mental Health, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery or other services such as substance abuse treatment programs, yoga, acupuncture, etc.; works closely with PEP staff to follow and manage, as appropriate, the referred patients' care related to the abovementioned testing and referrals; directly engages patients in the management of their pain and communicates all decisions regarding adjustments in opioid analgesics and non­ opioid adjuvants to them; ensures that referred patients have an up to date Consentfor Long-Term Opioid Therapy for Pain (if needed, directs PEP staff to work with referring providers to obtain consent);ensures that the program staff orders urine drug screen (UDS) if needed. Ensures that program staff provides recommendations to referring provider regarding the needed frequency of UDS;will, when necessary, prescribes medications according to approved formulary, and in accordance with Federal and State Law, and VHA Regulations and Scope of Practice; will, when necessary, prescribes controlled substances in a manner consistent with state professional licensure, state Controlled and Dangerous Substances licensure (CDS), and federal Drug Enforcement Administrationlicensure;will supervise the prescribing of both non-controlled substances and controlled substances of the PEP Physician Assistant (PA Pain) in accordance with current VHA Regulations and Scope of Practice rules;works closely with PEP pharmacists (Pharm Pain) to ensure that appropriate state Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) query are performed. Ensures that program staff provides recommendations to the referring provider regarding the needed frequency of future PMP queries; works closely with the Pharm Pain in their efforts to ensure that patients receive a reliable and timely supply of their opioid analgesics; works closely with Pharm Pain to ensure that education on the appropriate use of naloxone has been offered to patients and their co-habitants; processes clinical alerts and all other patient notifications in a timely manner, generally within 72 hours. Does not allow view alerts and other notifications to exceed accumulation of more than 100. Effectively addresses abnormal alert values; participates in, or leads, educational activities for SLVHCS Primary Care Providers, or others such as Urgent Care, regarding the safe and effective management of chronic pain, including educational recommendations from the VA Pain Management Opioid Safety VA Educational Guide; serves on medical center, VISN, and National VA committees and workgroups as assigned. Some of the PEP Physician's assigned duties may be spent at other outlying clinics, such as Community-Based Outpatient Clinics, or using telemedicine technology throughout Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System. Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday, Days - 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (40 hour work week/80 hour two week pay period). Physical Requirements:A pre-placement physical examination will be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates. The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. Physician applicants must have the mental and physical ability to perform core privileges required by the specialty position in addition to any specialty privileges requested. Qualifications Basic Requirements: Must be proficient in written and spoken English. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Colum Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.Proficiency in spoken and written English.Physical requirements outlined below.
