• We have an opening for a full-time GARDENER I position.
• Location: Texas A&M-Kingsville, 1255 N. Retama Dr., Kingsville, TX 78363.  Note: online applications accepted only.
• Schedule: Monday-Friday,  7:00am - 4:00pm
• Requirement: 1 year experience preferred, see Qualifications.

Summary: Plants and repairs new and established lawns; performs maintenance of ornamental landscapes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plans, plants and cultivates lawns using gardening implements and power-operated equipment.
• Repairs established lawns using seed mixtures and fertilizers recommended for particular soil types.
• Performs maintenance of ornamental landscapes, including lawns, small trees, groundcovers, shrubs and annual/perennial color displays.
• Locates and plants shrubs, trees and flowers as directed.
• Lays mulch, wood chips, moss and other soil moisturizers depending on the plants and climate.
• Trims shrubs and cultivates gardens; cleans grounds using rakes, brooms and hoses.
• Sprays trees and shrubs; applies supplemental liquid and dry nutrients to lawn and trees.
• Performs weed abatement and other grounds-related functions as needed.
• Digs trenches and installs drain tiles.
• Repairs concrete and asphalt walks and driveways.
• Operates motor vehicles to transport materials and equipment.
• Assists with completion and submittal of weekly tool, equipment and vehicle maintenance reports.
• Follows standard operating procedures for assigned tasks and projects; follows all safety protocol.
• Deploys for emergency response due to inclement weather, i.e. snow and ice, tornado or other crisis.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Ability to repeatedly lift 25 pounds and kneel/bend/stoop for extended periods of time.

Working Conditions: Extensive walking and equipment operation. Exposure to: extreme weather conditions, pesticides, fertilizers, pollen producing environment, paint and petroleum products. Work time expectation: 90% of time will be physical labor, 10% training and misc.
