Job Summary

Performs duties of the removal of rust, scale, paint, corrosion and foreign matter from metal and nonmetal items ranging in size from moderate to large complex item utilizing equipment such as automatic blasting bays, nozzle blasting chambers, nozzle blasting booths etc.

Operates abrasive blasting equipment: to clean rust, scale, paint, corrosion and foreign matter from metal and nonmetal surfaces. Controls pressure and abrasive by manipulating valves angles and distance of nozzle etc. to produce desired results. Assures that the proper abrasive i.e. metal, grit, metal shot, seed, glass bead etc. and/or consistency of combined abrasives: are used on the various surfaces to produce the desired finished product. Removes dust from cleaned item with high pressure air hose.

Will work on a variety of large end items in support of the refinishing process on shelters, vans, trailers, communication equipment. Using specialized tools and sandblasting equipment, cleans metal parts of various types of equipment in the shop for repair or overhaul. Sets controls and regulates amount of abrasive material flowing through sandblasting gun. Directs flow against material to remove rust, paint, tar, and dirt to prepare equipment for painting and processing through the shop. Makes adjustments and preventive maintenance repairs to sandblasting equipment.

Keeps equipment and area clean and in an orderly condition. Assists in other shop operations such as cleaning and preparing parts to be sent to paint shop; steam cleaning motors, chassis, and extra parts. Performs other related duties. Work assignments involve prolonged standing, stooping, and bending, with some walking. Lifts, carries, and sets up equipment and components weighing up to 75 lbs. Controls blasting hose with nozzles subject to high pressure, i.e. up to 100 psi. Work is performed inside booth which may be extremely hot during summer months. Is exposed to noise, dust, and flying abrasive material. Must wear protective suit (supplied with air while being used) at all times. Must be on the alert for malfunctions to sandblast and safety equipment.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Works inside closed sandblast chambers; is subject to extreme heat. Subject to cuts, burns, strains, etc. Exposed to noise, dust, fumes, and abrasives. Required to wear protective clothing.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste and smell. Frequently lifts items weighing 15-25 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme heat and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme heat or cold; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, or may include unsafe conditions, in which case questioning nonstandard operations or environmental factors that may involve unmitigated hazards, and providing feedback to supervisors and managers on all safety issues. Night work may be required. Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance. Position may require travel.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Must be a US citizen or permanent legal resident

  2. Must be able to speak, read, write and understand English.

  3. High school diploma or equivalent training/experience.

  4. Valid drivers license required.

  5. 2 years of related experience is required.

  6. Must be able to obtain and maintain a government Common Access Card (CAC) or Rapid Gate Pass.

  7. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and a government background check.

  8. Must obtain a Secret Clearance

  9. Must be able to lift 40 to 45 pounds according to OSHA Standards.

  10. Must be able to pass AA&E medical physical

  11. Passing PFT and RESPIRATOR FIT Test annually will be required for this position, which will be scheduled upon date of hire.

  12. Knowledge to operate, control and perform preventive maintenance features of automatic blasting bays, nozzle blasting chambers, nozzle blasting booths etc.

  13. Knowledge of sandblasting procedures and abrasives for large structures arid objects or small and intricate items of metal and nonmetal item.

  14. Ability to set up, prepare, operate, regulate and maintain complete stationary and portable sandblasting equipment.

  15. Knowledge of the characteristics of brass, corrosion resistant steel, aluminum, iron, steel, monel and other metals or nonmetal items.

  16. Knowledge of dry and wet blast processes.

  17. Knowledge of steam cleaning and water blasting process.

  18. Ability to identify composition of surfaces and determine proper abrasive or combination of abrasives.

  19. Ability to prepare sandblasting bays, charters, booths, etc.

  20. Ability to regulate-nozzle orifice for proper pressure of air or vapor to avoid warping or damaging items or surfaces and protect surface not to be blasted with masking tape.

  21. Ability to apply the proper methods and techniques.

  22. Ability to apply operating and maintenance manual instructions to maintain equipment.

Hours: Must be available for any shift. Willing to work weekends and other hours as needed. Shift may vary per work load
