The Director, Professional Billing is responsible for the insurance and patient billing/collection processes and Professional Billing quality management functions within the Spectrum Health system. This role leads a team of more than 100 staff and spans across multiple physician settings and tax ID's which deliver 2.4 million physician encounters annually. It is further responsible for optimizing reimbursement, ensuring accurate and compliant professional billing, and maintaining cash flow at acceptable levels for the professional services portion of the delivery system's total $2.5 billion in operating revenue.

Some essential functions include:

  • Plans, coordinates and directs daily functioning of professional insurance and patient billing/collection processes, and denial management. Maintains appropriate internal control safeguards over accounts receivable records and collection of cash. Participates in revenue cycle, coding, denial management, and access management work teams.
  • Works closely with the health system's Information System Department in developing and maintaining accounts receivable systems for optimum performance in tracking and collecting accounts receivable. Implements financial policies, procedures and supports Patient Finance Shared Services as developed in conjunction with Vice President Revenue Cycle. Establishes and maintains procedures which ensure that appropriate submission, billing and payment cycle of patient accounts can be maintained
  • Assumes ultimate accountability for the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, performance monitoring, retention, initiating/follow through with disciplinary action and termination of leadership team/staff in consultation with Human Resources. Mentors/coaches and develops leadership team/staff and acts as a role model and resource to them.

Basic Qualifications:

Education - Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent education and experience) in business administration, finance or related field

Experience - 7 years of experience typically gained through skills/knowledge/abilities in revenue cycle management

Preferred Qualifications:

Education - Master's Degree in business administration, finance or related field

Licenses - Certified Professional Coding Certificate (CPC)
