SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The R&D OEM Applications Engineer is responsible for supporting innovative customer focused technical solutions which move the Medtronic Patient Monitoring OEM business forward. The R&D OEM Applications Engineer will be a member of the Medtronic Patient Monitoring R&D Global OEM engineering team. The successful candidate needs to work well in a team where the work product reflects high professional standards. The successful candidate will also be able to face the customer, develop relationships within the OEM's engineering organization, and plan/execute projects both with OEM customers, and process development and improvements within the R&D group.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Lead and manage OEM integration projects and tasks for Medtronic Global Patient Monitoring, as well as OEM customer interaction in regional service related issues.

a. Work with OEM partners' R&D teams on MPM (Multi-Parameter Monitor) projects from concept to launch. This includes guiding and working with OEM customer R&D teams/management on project timeline, designs and testing, and compliance with Medtronic Patient Monitoring design/performance standards.

b. Monitor OEM integration projects and OEM customer service issues' progress by participating in regular team meetings with Sales, Marketing R&D and Engineering teams. Participate in customer communications for OEM Engineering issues during product development and for service issues after launch.

c. Develop OEM partner relationships and maintain regular contact with OEM partner's technical teams to understand present and potential projects (pipeline).

d. Work closely with the Medtronic OEM Sales and Marketing team to promote Medtronic Patient Monitoring technology and increase Medtronic Patient Monitoring sockets in the market place. Help to evaluate potential OEM customers/business from a technical perspective.

e. Travel when business requires to OEM partner's facilities, to work on-site with R&D teams on design and testing issues, and to hospital sites to evaluate OEM partner issues.

f. Improve the global OEM integration efficiency. Support global OEM Engineering infrastructure development by supporting operating mechanisms and processes.

g. Improve resolution efficiency of customer service issues. Drive customer service teams to maintain short response time to customer issues. Resolve the root cause of service issues quickly and efficiently.

  1. Develop strong understanding of OEM integration technology.

  2. Communicate with cross-functional teams.

  3. Participate in requirement reviews, design reviews and peer reviews.

  4. Knowledge of analog and digital circuitry components and design, printed circuit board layout, EMI/EMC testing, system level design and integration practices.

  5. Knowledge of software for requirements definition and development. Programming experience is a plus.

  6. Understand performance and test requirements of OEM modules.

  7. Ability to generate design documentation such as requirements specifications, schematics, PCB layout, DFMEA, verification test procedures, and test reports under FDA QSR design control practices.

  8. Knowledge of project management techniques such as scheduling, budgeting, and risk management.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC/NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  2. Participate in interviews for new department personnel.

  3. Assist in other project team's design reviews, risk analyses and other activities.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 0 years of experience

Education:

Minimum BSEE or equivalent, MSEE preferred

Experience:

5+ years Applications Engineering experience

Preferred Skills/

Qualifications:

  1. Customer interaction

  4. Basic Six Sigma training

  5. Patient monitoring technology

Skills/Competencies:

  1. Ability to lead technical discussions, presentations and design review

  2. Experience with medical device electronics, system level designs and EMI/EMC testing requirements

  3. Experience with PCBA layouts and schematics including simulation software

  4. Experience leading multi-layer PCBA and system level failure investigation and root cause analysis

  5. Experience solving problems using well defined processes and scientific methodologies

  6. Ability to interact with MPM (Multi-Parameter Monitor) OEM customers and build technical relationships

  7. Interactions as an Applications Engineer with Sales, Marketing and Customers

  8. Experience with basic project management tools and processes

  9. Experience participating in multi-functional internal and external teams

Other Skills:

  1. Knowledge of FDA, CE, ISO and IEC standards for patient monitors/medical devices

  2. Ability to manage multiple projects

  3. Awareness of the MPM OEM marketplace

  4. Cross-functional team leader

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS/SCOPE:

Reports to the R&D Global OEM Engineering Manager for functional leadership. Accountable to Project Managers for project-related responsibilities.

Interaction with team members from other disciplines to develop project requirements and schedules. Ongoing Interactions with Medtronic Patient Monitoring Sales and Marketing personnel, as well as MPM OEM customers, with the need to build strong technical relationships. Interaction with clinicians, third-party vendors, manufacturers, subcontractors and other users.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office and Engineering Laboratory

Frequent travel as required
