Job Description:

3M is seeking an undergraduate student for a Materials or Process Development Research and Development (R&D) internship located in Maplewood, Minnesota for summer 2019. Here, you go.

An internship is a temporary position within 3M. Interns typically work a full-time schedule throughout a 10-12 week assignment. This position is limited to working 899 hours per service credit year. 3M provides eligible interns with temporary housing and round-trip travel reimbursement in accordance with current policy.

Job Summary:

Individuals hired as a summer intern in 3M Research and Development will work with senior scientists to develop advanced technologies and products in one of 3M's Corporate Research Labs or Business Group Labs. At 3M, our researchers leverage our 46 technology platforms and capabilities to develop new technologies and products that solve customer problems across many businesses and markets. 3M offers over 55,000 products that are helping customers are used in consumer electronics, hospitals and clinics, industrial manufacturing, and safety products. 3M core technologies are highly varied that include material technologies such adhesives, nanotechnology, and biomaterials and process technologies such as precision coating, radiation processing, and polymer extrusions. These technologies are innovatively used in all 3M products such as adhesive tapes, protective coatings, film technologies, non-wovens, reflective signage, and respirators. 3M is applying Science to Life.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Collaboration with senior researchers on an assigned product/technology development project
  • Document detailed experimental records in 3M electronic laboratory notebooks
  • Analysis of experimental results and offer explanations for observations to project team
  • Collaboration with other R&D functions as needed for project including researchers from other groups, analytical chemists, process engineers, and the like
  • Present summer project work in a poster presentation and potentially a technical report

Basic Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in a Science or Engineering discipline from an accredited university

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completed at least one year of undergraduate studies in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Biomolecular Engineering, or related discipline from an accredited university
  • 6-12 months of practical laboratory experience in synthesis of polymers and small molecules, chemical/polymer processing, advanced analytical and materials characterization, vapor coating, nanotechnology, development of sensors, and optical materials
  • Previous relevant intern experience or co-op with company or university
  • Use of designed experiments and statistical analysis of experimental results
  • Demonstrated scientific and technical acumen, with ability to make connections between science/technology and real-world concerns
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Ability to deal with the ambiguity as it relates to technical problems and experimentation
  • Demonstrated scientific excellence as evidenced by publications and presentations
  • Demonstrated leadership activities and building network
  • Self-motivated and self-directed
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentation)

Responsibilities of this position may include direct and/or indirect physical or logical access to information, systems, technologies subjected to the regulations/compliance with U.S. Export Control Laws.
