Based in Los Angeles, CA the Director, Maintenance & Repair is responsible for managing a safe and efficient maintenance operation, supporting yard, vessel, rail, gate, and customer service needs. This position is also responsible to manage all maintenance operations within budget and according to the standards and procedures set by APM Terminals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct the full Maintenance & Repair (M&R) department.
  • Continuously develop managerial and maintenance skills of direct reports.
  • Ensure labor is directed to maintain a clean and safe working environment adhering to OSHA, hazardous, environmental, and corporate safety procedures.
  • Investigate long-term cost savings solutions for areas of excessive repair requirements.
  • Controls maintenance levels to maximize the efficiency and minimize the cost of the maintenance operation. Average budget approximately $40 million annually.
  • Attends daily management meetings, and communicates the needs of the department to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Maintains a working and professional relationship with ILWU labor, and is knowledgeable in ILWU labor contracts. Manage the performance of the ILWU labor on a daily basis, including, recommending or implementing positive reinforcement or disciplinary action as required. Resolves on the job labor issues with ILWU terminal staff and/or officials, and represents the interests of the Company. Participates in grievance proceedings directly involved in decision making process, ensuring the company's best interests are achieved.
  • Participate in negotiations with vendors and service providers for other major M&R-related projects;
  • Prepare input for internal approval process for M&R related investments and projects.
  • Identify opportunities within M&R for efficiencies, cost savings and profit improvements to create value for the business.
  • Prepare and on regular basis review of overall maintenance plans and scope with the aim of identifying opportunities for improvements.
  • Lead implementation of major projects and changes in execution of M&R department's duties and responsibilities.
  • Develop local best practices and benchmark against APMT's Global TAM strategies, policies and objectives
  • Ensures that all equipment needs are met on a shift-by-shift basis, and that all equipment is operationally safe.
  • Ensures that terminal equipment requirements are met or exceeded with zero service failures.
  • Ensures that all Purchase Orders are coded correctly and charged to the correct department and code. Ensure that all Work Orders are finished in a timely manner to allow the preventive maintenance list to remain up to date.
  • Ensure up-keep of all records of terminal operating permits and scheduling of any required inspections by regulatory agencies.
  • Write and maintain a schedule for preventative maintenance for the power equipment ensuring maximum asset life per the corporate capital investment table is achieved.
  • Respond to request for repairs promptly, without disruption to terminal operations ensuring safety and cost efficiencies associated with repair are focused upon.
  • Liaise with Global M&R organization and implement global M&R policies locally.

Who we are looking forThe ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Education - College Degree in electrical, mechanical or related subject at similar level, or equivalent working experience of 10+ years in maintenance operations.
  • Work Experience – Must have broad management experience in operations and/or maintenance at container terminal(s)
  • Accountability – Ability to set operational plans with mid-term impact by maintaining standards that lead to high performance and execution
  • Agility – Ability to improve and make important changes rapidly
  • Collaboration – Ability to influence and manage up when working together across boundaries
  • Functional Excellence – Broad knowledge of several job areas or mastery in specific discipline.

Pre-established authorization to work in the US is strongly preferred.
