ROLE SUMMARY

The Apprentice Welder-Fitter is responsible for assisting the welding department with the fit-up and welding of components to produce product in a timely fashion, while maintaining the highest level of quality and safety in our industry. Work with the welding department and leadership team to learn effective and productive welding operations.

  • As a Welder-Fitter Apprentice you will work under the direct supervision of a qualified Journeyman Welder-Fitter learning Gas, Stick, Mig, Tig welding.
  • Learn to fabricate complex weldments in accordance with customer requirements/specifications.
  • Take ownership of organizing and cleaning specified work area in the welding department.
  • Communicates with the Leadership Team when necessary.
  • Complete 4 year 8000 hour apprenticeship program through on the job training and classroom studies.
  • Potential for exposure to hazardous materials, heights, temperature extremes, equipment in‑motion, dusty and dirty conditions, stooping, bending and heavy lifting, working in confined spaces (vessels).
  • The proper use of the correct Personal Protective Equipment for each task as well as compliance with all applicable safety Standard Procedures is a must.
  • May work variable shifts and 24‑hour on‑call as required. Participates in multicraft work activities as required. (EMU‑craft‑generic)

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

A Welder-Fitter Apprentice working within the Engineering and Maintenance, Operations, and Utilities environment, The general responsibilities for the Pipefitter Welder are to apply the principles of rational systems to solve practical problems, and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. There will also be opportunity to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic, and/or schedule forms and also read diagrams, blueprints, operational manuals, methods and procedures. Moreover, the candidate must be able to read and comprehend company policies and procedures, safety policies and procedures, and provide safety in performance and best practices in manufacturing.

  • Welds metal parts together, using SMAW, GMAW, GTAW welding techniques.
  • Performs tasks related to welding, such as thermal cutting and grinding.
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes, and increases size of metal parts.
  • Installs modifications to equipment, or structures.
  • Welds fabricated pipe assemblies.
  • Positions and clamps together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding.
  • Pipe fitting and ability to draw isometric diagrams and develop bill of material for piping system construction.
  • Dismantle and installation of bolted connections (pipe, vessels, etc.).
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of fixed equipment to include pumps, seals, blowers and specialty chemical plant processing equipment.
  • Operate forklift, pallet lift, power tools, & hand tools including drill press, band saws, drills, hacksaws, wrenches and grinders.
  • Complete 4 year 8000 hour apprenticeship program through on the job training and classroom studies.
  • Must become AWS certified on completion of apprenticeship. Must pass required procedures.
  • Additional Duties and Responsibilities Include:

May work variable shifts and 24 hour on call as required. Participates in multicraft work activities as required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Welder-Fitter Apprentice Education Requirements: • High school diploma / general education degree (GED) or Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Preferred experience.

  • Industrial pipefitting experience preferred.

Must have experience with reading isometric drawings, measurements and blueprints.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience for taking field measurements, performing pipe layout and fitting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with operating machinery necessary to complete tasks such as: forklift, man lift, drill presses, band saws, and cranes up to 15 tons (preferred).
  • Must be familiar with work order processing in a CMMS.
  • Must have the ability to become AWS certified on completion of apprenticeship. Must pass required procedures.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Previous Pipefitter experience preferred

Brazing and tack welding a plus.

Basic computer user skills are required (Microsoft systems).

Blue print reading a plus

Excellent communications Skills

Strong work ethic and the ambition to be the best.

Self-starter with ability to work independently.
