Role Summary:

The Global Head - Strategy, Search & Evaluation (SSE) will be part of the Chief Technology Officer's (CTO) Leadership Team and plays a critical role in charting GEHC Life Sciences' long term growth and portfolio development, driving both the future of the company and shaping the industry landscape. You will formulate and manage the innovation pipeline, ensuring the company invests in the technologies and capabilities needed to stay ahead of the competition and maintain market leadership.

Essential Responsibilities:

This role will be responsible for developing actionable solutions for some of the most challenging issues facing the healthcare industry today. The individual will have significant interactions with colleagues in the CTO Leadership (CTO LS) Team, the GEHC Life Sciences Executive Committee (LSEC) Team, and GEHC Business Development teams to create a common vision and roadmap for the company in areas of strategic growth for GEHC Life Sciences. The primary focus will be on strategy development, "sensing" future scientific / technological breakthroughs, developing a partner ecosystem for the business, securing the right external alliances with industry and academic partners, and developing the appropriate business models for GEHC to become a leader in the Life Sciences innovation ecosystem.

The selected candidate will have a leadership role in driving the results of the SSE team, which is the centralized hub for identifying, assessing and incubating breakthrough technologies for all business units within GEHC Life Sciences. The SSE team provides direct value to GEHC Life Sciences through accessing new assets and platform technologies, with the objective to be a force multiplier for the organization. As the leader of this team, the Global Head will be required to build relationships and partner with third parties and internal teams across GEHC Life Sciences, leading, inspiring, and driving others to think creatively and proactively.

Leadership Characteristics and Responsibilities

  • Identify and assess broad strategic opportunities for GEHC Life Sciences' business interests through ongoing research of industry trends and risk assessment, as well as partner with senior leadership to develop a long-term vision and scientific strategic roadmap.
  • Manage a portfolio of complex projects as the primary scientific contact and spokesperson for GEHC Life Sciences. Make presentations on behalf of GEHC Life Sciences at industry networking events, scientific conferences and other venues.
  • Simplify complex technical and business information into specific actions with clear accountability; make decisions with speed and accuracy based on best available information, and communicate strategic priorities clearly and concisely. Able to see multiple futures and solutions and add personal wisdom and experience to arrive at a recommendation for executive consideration.
  • Understand customer needs, marketplace dynamics, industry trends, and the competitive landscape in order to assess new ideas and create a prioritization framework to fund innovation.
  • Manage the opportunity evaluation process by leading and working with cross functional teams, including technical and scientific development, finance, IP/legal, regulatory and marketing.
  • Communicate effectively with multiple levels of the organization including top management. Create presentations on opportunities evaluated by SSE team for senior management review, approval and funding.
  • Provide thorough and timely assessments and updates to multiple audiences in multiple mediums to ensure efficient communication and seamless cross functional collaboration.
  • Coordinate and prioritize the portfolio of search & evaluation projects to ensure the success of the overall portfolio. Ability to draw on multiple resources to get things done resourcefully with an aptitude to foresee and plan around obstacles.
  • Lead team to success as a dedicated people leader.
  • Coach and manage the performance and career development of all direct reports. Ability to get the most / best out of people by clearly communicating goals, holding people accountable and keeping people informed.
  • Manage internal and external relationships, which will entail dedicated time in office and in field identifying, building, and maintaing relationships.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • PhD, MD or MPH degree with a strong business mindset.
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in scouting or commercialization of technology, or startup portfolio management.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategy formation, market analysis, competitive landscaping and business development.
  • Ability to synthesize multiple data points to create strategic point of view.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate complex business issues.
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter and creative problem-solver.
  • Ability to multitask while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to work within a matrix organizational environment and to interact with executives at the most senior levels.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Thorough understanding of one or more of the existing business units at GEHC Life Sciences, such as BioProcess, Core Imaging/Pharmaceutical Diagnostics, Cell Therapy and Genomic & Cellular Research.
  • Rare combination of "thinker" and "do'er" with a strong aptitude for understanding strategic goals, then building and executing the tactics to accomplish them. Exceptional ability to balance creative thinking with strong business judgment and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and Skype-for-Business and familiarity with mobile communication technologies, such as remote data access, cloud-based data sharing, mobile video/audioconferencing.
  • Consulting experience could be valuable.
