This position is within ULAM's In-vivo Animal Core (IVAC). The necropsy tasks include prosecting tissues from various research animal species, trimming, cassetting, decalcifying and processing tissues in addition to other necropsy oversight tasks. This person will be expected to perform various additional duties leading to the ultimate product, the stained tissue slide. These tasks include, cassette and slide labeling, tissue embedding, and frozen tissue sectioning. Additionally, this position will support other ULAM-IVAC service areas as needed.

Responsibilities*

Prosecting tissues from multiple research animal species

Trimming, cassetting, and decalcifying tissues

Perform tissue processing and embedding of small and large animals

Organize necropsy room supplies, tissue storage and recordkeeping

Perform frozen tissue sectioning.

Perform multiple tasks in the necropsy and histology laboratory

Ability to follow established policies and procedures in a laboratory environment

Record services into recharge forms

Maintain chemical inventory and manifest of hazardous chemicals, follow safety guidelines

Attend meetings with PI's and laboratory staff, and participate in lab meetings

Assist ULAM veterinary residents as needed in labeling and accessioning cases

Perform data entry into Microsoft Office applications

Customer service skills and other duties as assigned

For Associate Level: Perform routine experimental procedures

Required Qualifications*

Associates Degree and 1-3 years experience required.

Ability to function independently as well as a team member in a team setting

This position requires considerable use of arms and legs and activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials which at times weigh as much as 50 lbs or more.

Must be able to perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts and bedding materials for prolonged periods of time

Desired Qualifications*

Bachelors degree in Science for Intermediate Level

Associates degree for Associate level position

Previous histology and tissue handling experience

Work Schedule

40 hours per week, 5-day work week. Occasional overtime may be required.
