Manager of Occupational Health and Safety

Job Summary

Develops and ensure implementation of all domestic distribution center’s occupational health and safety programs. Monitor worker compensation losses and develop and implement medical management programs and loss control strategies. Monitors regulatory trends, develops response strategies and communicates to senior management. Provides direction & guidance to distribution center management for all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) interactions. Directs Zurich Insurance Loss Control national service strategy for all distribution centers. Consults and provides support to international divisions’ distribution centers as necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Evaluates and identifies loss producing physical conditions and associate behaviors in the distribution centers. Develops loss reduction strategies and assists operations management in the implementation of its programs and procedures. Communicates accident statistics and loss costs to distribution center and corporate senior management. Monitors effectiveness of current safety programs and recommends alternatives as necessary. Conducts site visits to each distribution center on a quarterly or as needed basis.
  • Ensures compliance with all local, state and federal codes regarding occupational health and safety. Provides direction and support for DC senior management involved in on-site OSHA inspections, contesting citations and legal proceedings. Represents the company at all OSHA informal hearings to contest and negotiate serious or willful citations. Prepares supportive evidence and documentation to assist in the company’s response for each citation. Summarizes hearing findings and publishes results to all facility directors. Monitors and evaluates state and federal regulations for potential future impact on Distribution Services.
  • Develops and submits Home Office Distribution Services senior management strategies for the company’s Occupational Health and Safety policies and programs. Provides direct guidance and support to the DC Facility Directors and Operations Managers in the implementation of safety programs, policies and procedures. Evaluates loss trending analysis and develops recommendations of loss reduction strategies to the Home Office Distribution Services senior management.
  • Provides direction and guidance to the Occupational Health Nurses regarding strategies for facility workers compensation cost containment and claims management.
  • Develops and manages the implementation of management training programs relative to loss control in conjunction with the home office and DC training departments and Zurich Loss Control safety consultants. Evaluates management compliance with loss control objectives and submits evaluations to senior management for performance analysis.
  • Performs special projects as assigned.
Job Knowledge / Skills
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Safety or related subject
  • Principles and techniques of modern safety management
  • Thorough knowledge of safety laws and regulations, including their interpretation and enforcement
  • General knowledge of safety/facility engineering
  • Knowledge of workers compensation or risk insurance company standards and requirements
  • Thinks strategically in anticipating both injury prevention and injury management issues
  • Builds and provides directions for effective health and safety teams in the DC’s
  • Strong management principles and leadership skills
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in occupational health and safety in a warehouse or distribution center environment
