About this job

This is an OPS Licensed Practical Nurse position in a local county health department, working under the direction of Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor. The incumbent provides public health nursing services for clients in the immunization clinic. This position requires complete and current knowledge of all aspects of the immunization program, and the ability to work independently on a highly skilled level. The employee must maintain current work knowledge and skills based on the Department of Health programs and policies. This position is classified as a sensitive position. Incumbent handles protected health information on a need to know basis following Department of Health, HIPPAA and Information Security and privacy policy. Employee abides by State/Federal laws governing health information. Responsible to maintain confidentiality, security privacy and integrity of protected health information. Refers and utilizes DOH 50-10-05. This position has access to the following information sets: Immunizations, FloridaSHOTS, and HMS. Incumbent may be required to work during or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency operations functions required of the incumbent included but are not limited to Special Care Center.

Assist in providing services in the health department administering childhood, adults and overseas travel immunization. Assesses the client's immunization status and health history. Educates clients regarding vaccine contraindications, precautions, possible side effects and next return date. Properly handles and stores vaccines according to guidelines. Accurately codes (using HMS or EARS) all vaccines on a daily basis. Maintains current references for childhood, adult and overseas travel immunizations.

Maintains up-to-date overseas travel information and is knowledgeable of the appropriate vaccines to administer relevant to the area of travel.

Monitors in-house childhood and adult immunizations by keeping a daily inventory of shots given, and providing that information to the department supervisor

Monitors all refrigerators/freezers that store vaccine insuring property temperatures are maintained and temperature logs are posted and properly used on every refrigerator/freezer. Assists with physical inventory count as needed.

When necessary provides public health nursing services for clients in Family Planning (FP), Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) and TB clinics.

Attends all required meeting and keeps current on new immunization schedules and guidelines. Performs other miscellaneous related duties as required. Completes weekly leave/attendance records and daily employee activity records (EARs) within required time frame.

Ability to frequently bend, kneel, reach, and sit or stand for long periods of time

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed

Ability to frequently use telephone, computer, copier and small hand tools, i.e.; stapler, scissors, etc.

Ability to work with occasional loud noises

Ability to locate information that is listed alphabetically & numerically

Ability to follow instructions

Ability to review data for accuracy & completeness

Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED -

Licensure as a practical nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.22 or 8.27

Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

Valid Florida driver license

Taking Confidential Information Out of the Health Department: Prior permission is granted to remove and transport confidential information from the premises of DOH-Lee as defined in the current version of the FL DOH Information Security and Privacy Policy 7. Employee must maintain the minimum required information in their control at all times in a lockable device. Information should be returned to DOH-Lee, by the close of same business day. If not feasible, prior permission by the supervisor must be granted to keep information until the next business day.
