About this job

There are 4 main functions of production at Medtronic. Fabrication, Assembly, Packaging, and Testing. Production does NOT produce the insulin pump. They produce the glucose sensors that the end user injects into their body. The glucose sensor monitors the body's glucose levels and is connected to the insulin pump. It communicates with the insulin pump to ensure that the user has proper levels of insulin in their body.

Fabrication - focuses on the fabrication of the glucose sensor, and involves chemical processes. The common duties in fabrication include plating and singulation. Fabrication is fast-paced, but not as fast paced as assembly. However, mistakes are most costly in fabrication as they are working with large batches. Operators in fabrication are responsible for a single step in the fabrication process. They work with small parts underneath the microscope.

Assembly - focuses on the mechanical assembly of the sensor base, including the needle. Operators in assembly work in a fast paced environment and are responsible for a single step in the assembly process. They work with small parts underneath the microscope.

Testing - involves quality checks through the various steps in fabrication and assembly.

Packaging - involves final inspection and packaging of sensors for shipment. This position is NOT in the clean room.

Operators do not interview for a specific role within production. They are placed where their skills and prior experience are best suited. Each of the 4 shifts contain these departments.

Medtronic Production operates on a 3/4/12 schedule. They work 3 days one week, 4 days the next, and all on 12 hour shifts. It is a full time position, working 84 hours every 2 weeks, with 28 hours of overtime every two weeks (included in their schedules) additional overtime is available once they become more skilled. They have 4 shifts as follows.

Shift A: Sunday-Tuesday/Sunday-Wednesday 6am-6:30pm
Shift B: Sunday - Tuesday/Sunday-Wednesday 6pm-6:30am
Shift C: Thursday-Saturday/Wednesday-Saturday 6am-6:30pm
Shift D: Thursday-Saturday/Wednesday-Saturday 6pm-6:30am

The daytime shifts (A&C) pay $14/hr.
The overnight shifts (B&D) pay $15.25/hr.
