PURPOSE OF POSITION

In accordance with the Christian principles of the YMCA, the swim coach will be responsible for the overall organization, management and daily operation of the YMCA swim team. He/she will exemplify the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith in all aspects of the position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
  1. Conduct all swim team practices.

  2. Schedule all swimmers for entry into meets.

  3. Conduct all home meets.

  4. Have knowledge and ability to evaluate swim team members.

  5. Communicate effectively with swim team, their parents and volunteers.

  6. Recruit new participants and volunteers for team.

  7. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Place participants correctly in levels for ability.

  2. Analyze participants’ readiness for entry into meet events.

  3. Plan and conduct swim team practices based on level of participants that

promotes the holistic development of each individual member.
  1. Direct swim meets.

  2. Maintain practice and meet records.

  3. Assist with developing and promoting swim team parent volunteer committee.

  4. Communicate progress of participants to parents.

  5. Research and implement current stroke techniques that can be applied to participants

  6. Take responsibility to maintain all certifications.

  7. Responsible for the development of an environment that supports character development.

  8. Follow all pool rules and policies

  9. Attend all scheduled staff meetings, swim team practices, trainings, meets and parent meetings.

  10. Follow Gateway Region YMCA uniform policy.

Requirements

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School diploma or equivalent

Experience: Less than 2 years experience as swim team coach, minimum age 18.

Special skills, Licenses, Certifications or Equipment:
  • Current YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard certification; obtain YMCA lifeguard within 30 – 60 days.

  • Current CPRAED for Professional Rescuer certification

  • Current Emergency Oxygen Administration certification

  • Current First Aid certification

  • YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming within 4 months

  • YMCA Swim Coach or Red Cross Swim Coach and Safety within 4 months
