PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under the general direction of the Day Camp Director, the incumbent is responsible for assisting with the overall program, supervision of children and day-to-day operation of the Y Day Camp program. He/she relates to the Program Director, Staff Team, and community resource agencies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
  1. Follow general direction and perform other duties as assigned of by the Day Camp Director and/or designee.

  2. Ensure the individual needs of the children are met for proper coordination of the program within the camp site.

  3. Assist to plan, direct, supervise and lead Camp staff, their groups and overall camp program.

  4. Utilize solid judgment and discretionary skills as well as make independent decisions that will affect the YMCA.

  5. Maintain positive relationships with many diverse people, including staff, parents, volunteers and program site administration and demonstrate strong public relation skills.

  6. Ensure YMCA policies and guidelines are followed at all times.

  7. Maintain an environment that ensures children’s safety and well being.

  8. Model, practice and carry out the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.

  9. Plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities that advance all areas of children’s development and learning, including social, emotional, intellectual and physical competence.

  10. Conduct the program in accordance with YMCA goals and principles of developmentally appropriate practices.

  11. Meet the training requirements set forth by the Association Training Model.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Understands the concepts of mutual respect, caring, honesty and responsibility in positive communications and interaction with children, parents and staff.

  2. Assist to plan developmentally appropriate activities and experiences.

  3. Guides and assists in development of program content, including swimming and special events.

  4. Supervise, direct, evaluate and implement Counselor In Training Program.

  5. Compile and provide counselors with supplies needed for each week and manage all program supplies to run a quality camp program.

  6. Ensure counselors are prepared for each days activities.

  7. Keep up to date records on all children participating in the camp program.

  8. Assist in development, training and attendance of camp orientation and training.

  9. Assists with administrative duties, problem solving and parent/YMCA communications.

10. Ensure open, positive communication and mentoring is provided to all staff on an ongoing basis.

11. Assist in development, training and ongoing educational requirements through orientation, training and continued education opportunities.

12. Understands role as that of facilitator vs. instructor.

13. Responsible for assisting Day Camp Director and Registrar with accounts receivables.

14. Communicate problems, issues or concerns with supervisor.

15. Posses the ability to relate to children, parents, peers, branch staff, volunteers and community.

16. Must pass criminal records check and Family Care Safety Registry (FCSR).

17. Must read and sign YMCA Child Abuse pamphlet and report any suspected case of child abuse to supervisor.

18. Must read and sign YMCA Staff Informational Manual.

19. Must ensure and maintain confidentiality of family, children and staff.

20. Actively participates in all program activities and special events.

21. Follow all guidelines and procedures established by the YMCA.

22. Responsible for ensuring diverse program experience for children each day.

23. Understand difference between discipline and punishment. Use positive verbal and non-verbal communication with children to build trusting and stable relationships.

24. Keep up-to-date records on all children participating in the program.

25.Must be willing to substitute in any care area with flexibility and a positive attitude.

26. Participate in branch fundraisers.

27. Teamwork is demonstrated through personal interaction amongst all staff.

28. Responsible for insuring the safety of all children.

29. Know where children are at all times.

30. Children are provided opportunities to build self-help and independence skills.

31. Ensure all children’s individual needs are met with dignity and respect.

32. Must take care of all hygiene requirements of the children.

33. Program equipment is cared for properly and checked daily for safety.

34. Indoor and outdoor space is monitored daily for health and safety concerns.

35. Report all repairs, incidents, and accidents to the Program Director and/or Executive Director. Reports made on appropriate forms and within required time frame.

36. Responsible to keep program clean and sanitary to insure health and safety of all children.

37. Keep a neat and clean appearance, in accordance with the standards set by the YMCA. Staff wear nametags and staff shirts while on duty.

38. Responsible for all aspects of quality customer service-including greeting parents, handling parent questions and concerns and staying informed of programs.

39. Serve as a relationship builder for site staff and families enhancing their commitment to the YMCA members and the mission.

40. Keeps current on any new program activities or special events to assist and enhance the programs.

41. Able to interpret YMCA policy and procedures and make independent, sound judgments and decisions, which support the YMCA.

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Have a High School Diploma or equivalent

Possess at least 2 years’ experience working with children.

Must have at least 1 year experience in working or attending a day or residence camp program

Must have strong communication, organization and detail skills.

Must have the ability to relate to children, parents, branch staff members and volunteers.

Must become CPR/First Aid Certified with in established YMCA timeline.

Must complete YMCA required trainings with in established YMCA timeline.

Must follow directions, have strong leadership skills, be self-motivated and posses knowledge of group work principals and processes.

Certification in Day Camp Director within established time frame.
