PURPOSE OF POSITION
Under the direction of the Health and Wellness Director/Coordinator this position’s primary goal is to instruct group fitness classes for members in accordance with the YMCA Health and Wellness Program Model while putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The “Y” values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith will be exemplified in all aspects.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include as many as necessary)
11. Maintains visual contact, monitors each individual’s level of fatigue and looks for signs of overexertion.
12. Guides students skillfully through transitions with easily understood cues.
13. Encourages students to progress when appropriate; applies principles of overload and rest.
14. Set up equipment and stores it securely after class and maintains the cleanliness of the wellness area.
15. Responsible for securing own subs if instructor cannot attend scheduled class times.
16. Perform other related duties as assigned.
17. Perform all duties with honesty, caring, respect, responsibility, and faith.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (include as many as necessary)
11. Basic practical knowledge of human anatomy and kinesiology.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education:
High school education or equivalent preferred
Experience:
2 or more years of experience as a group exercise instructor
Special skills, Licenses, Certifications or Equipment:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include as many as necessary)
- Promotes the YMCA’s healthy spirit, mind and body philosophy through group fitness classes.
- Has a professional affiliation with an educational resource or training organization.
- Demonstrates a commitment to continuing education: takes courses to expand knowledge base and practical skill.
- Attends all required meetings as directed by their supervisor.
- Demonstrates knowledge of theory of exercise physiology, kinesiology and injury prevention, cardiovascular and medical considerations, nutrition and body composition, and proper class format and leadership skills.
- Screens students carefully for risk factors, and any health problem or medical limitation that would prevent them from participating.
- Gives pre-class instructions; explains goals of aerobics, how to take a pulse and determine target heart rate range.
- Is competent at demonstrating safe and effective exercise technique. Can modify exercises for those with low-back discomfort or musculoskeletal problems, as well as pregnant, de-conditioned or overweight individuals.
- Assess levels of fitness and directs students to appropriate classes, beginning through advance.

- Currently group exercise certified with a national organization that tests both theoretical knowledge and performance, such as A.F.A.A., A.C.E., A.C.S.M., N.S.C.A.
- Currently certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (C.P.R.), A.E.D. and First Aid. *
