PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under the general direction of the Program Director & Camp Director, the incumbent is responsible for assisting with the overall program, supervision of children and day-to-day operation of the Y Day Camp program. He/she relates to the Program Director, Camp Director, Staff Team, and community resource agencies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
  1. Follow general direction and perform other duties as assigned of by the Y Camp Director, Program Director and/or designee.

  2. Ensure the individual needs of the children are met for proper coordination of the program within the site.

  3. Utilize solid judgment and discretionary skills as well as make independent decisions that will affect the YMCA.

  4. Maintain positive relationships with many diverse people, including staff, parents, volunteers and program site administration and demonstrate strong public relation skills.

  5. Ensure YMCA policies and guidelines are followed at all times.

  6. Maintain an environment that ensures children’s safety and well being.

  7. Model, practice and carry out the YMCA Values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.

  8. Plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities that advance all areas of children’s development and learning, including social, emotional, intellectual and physical competence.

  9. Conduct the program in accordance with YMCA goals and principles of developmentally appropriate practices.

  10. Meet the training requirements set forth by the Association Training Model.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Understand the concepts of mutual respect, caring, honesty and responsibility in positive communications and interaction with children, parents and staff.

  2. Assist Counselor in development of camp program content and special events.

  3. Provide Camp Director with list of supplies needed for each week and manage all program supplies to run a quality program.

  4. Understand role as that of facilitator vs. instructor.

  5. Communicate problems, issues or concerns with supervisor.

  6. Keep up to date records on children working with.

  7. Must report any suspected case of child abuse to supervisor.

  8. Must ensure and maintain confidentiality of family, children and staff.

  9. Actively participates in all program activities and special events.

  10. Follow all guidelines and procedures established by the YMCA.

  11. Responsible for ensuring diverse program experiences for children each day.

  12. Understand difference between discipline and punishment. Use positive verbal and non-verbal communication with children to build trusting and stable relationships.

  13. Substitute in any camp area with flexibility and a positive attitude.

  14. Participate in branch fundraisers.

  15. Demonstrate teamwork through personal interaction amongst all staff.

  16. Ensure safety of all children and know where children are at all times.

  17. Provide opportunities to build self-help and independence skills.

  18. Oversee hygiene requirements of the children.

  19. Ensure all children’s individual needs are met with dignity and respect.

  20. Care for program equipment and check daily for safety.

  21. Monitor indoor and outdoor space for health and safety concerns.

  22. Report all repairs, incidents, and accidents to the Camp Director and/or Program Director. Reports made on appropriate forms and within required time frame.

  23. Responsible to keep program site clean and sanitary to insure health and safety of all children.

  24. Keep a neat and clean appearance, in accordance with the standards set by the YMCA. Wear nametags and staff shirts while on duty.

  25. Responsible for all aspects of quality customer service-including greeting parents, handling parent questions and concerns and staying informed of programs.

  26. Serve as a relationship builder for site staff and families enhancing their commitment to the YMCA members and the mission.

  27. Keep current on any new program activities or special events to assist and enhance the programs.

  28. Interpret YMCA policy and procedures and make independent, sound judgments and decisions, which support the YMCA.

  29. Ensure the individualized needs of the child with disabilities are being met and supported (e.g. personal care and socio/emotional/behavioral issues), while remaining within approved program parameters).

  30. Ensure the child receiving support is fully included in all site activities, as much as is reasonable to expect, based upon the level of documented ability.

  31. Ensure that all required individualized paperwork pertaining to the child receiving support is completed accurately, on a monthly basis and is delivered to the appropriate branch staff in a timely manner, to ensure billing deadlines can be met

  32. Responsible for reading and understanding the individualized paperwork pertaining to the child receiving support.

  33. Ensure that the approved levels of support for the child are maintained, as recommended.

Ratios: 1 (one staff one child), 1:2 (one staff two children), 1:3 (one staff three children), 1:4 (one staff four children).

Requirements

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have at least 3 years’ experience working with children.

  • Recommend at least 1 years working with special needs populations

  • Must have the ability to relate to children, parents, branch staff members and volunteers

  • Must become CPR/First Aid Certified with established YMCA timeline.

  • Must complete YMCA required trainings with in established YMCA timeline.

  • Must pass a medical examination including TB Risk Assessment as required by DHSS and Hep A (if applicable).

  • Must pass DHSS child abuse screening, criminal records check and Family Care Safety Registry (FCSR).

  • Must follow directions and be self-motivated.

  • Must complete a new hire packet prior to first working day.
