Purpose of Position

Under the general guidance and direction of the Youth & Family Director the Teen Chaperone will support in planning, directing and supervising the program activities for the Youth Group. Ensuring developmentally appropriate practices and attention to the safety and individual needs of each camper while modeling, practicing and caring out the YMCA Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
  1. Provide opportunities for youth to explore higher education, personal goals, academic skills, and leadership development through an interactive program.

  2. Supervise program participants and implement curriculum and field trips.

  3. Provide a safe and high quality experience to the participants.

  4. Lead a group of children in educational, values-oriented, recreation and social activities according to the program goals.

  5. Utilize solid judgment and discretionary skills as well as make independent decisions that will affect the Gateway Region YMCA and its departments.

  6. Maintain positive relationships with many diverse people, including staff, volunteers and program site administration, demonstrating strong public relations.

  7. Ensure YMCA policies and guidelines are followed at all times.

  8. Model, practice and carry out the YMCA values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.

Requirements

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School diploma or equivalent

Experience:

1. Must be at least 21 years of age

2. Must have experience and ability to lead and communicate with school age children (biligual preferred)

3. Strong commitment to providing quality recreational experiences to children

4. Able to lead, plan, organize and implement program activities

5. Flexible in planning programs for youth groups

6. Must have strong communication, organization and detail skills

7. Must have the ability to relate to children, parents, branch staff members and volunteers

8. Must pass CPR/First Aid Certification

9. Must complete YMCA required trainings

10. Must follow directions, have strong leadership skills, be self-motivated and possess knowledge of group work principals and processes
