PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under the general guidance and direction of the Program Director the Day Camp Program Coordinator will provide support in planning, directing and supervising camp activities for the YMCA Day Camp program. Ensuring developmentally appropriate practices and attention to the safety and individual needs of each camper while modeling, practicing and caring out the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (include as many as necessary)

  1. Plan, direct, supervise, and lead Camp Staff, their counseling groups and overall camp program.

  2. Ensure the individual needs of the children are met for proper coordination of the program within the program sites.

  3. Utilize solid judgment and discretionary skills as well as make independent decisions that will affect the Gateway Region YMCA and it’s departments.

  4. Maintain positive relationships with many diverse people, including staff, volunteers and program site administration and demonstrate strong public relations.

  5. Ensure YMCA policies and guidelines are followed at all times.

  6. Model, practice and carry out the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include as many as necessary)
  1. Responsible for supervision of all site staff and their responsibilities.

  2. Guides and assist in development of program activities and special events. Ensure written lesson plans; parent notes and weekly newsletters are prepared and distributed.

  3. Assist in development, training and attendance of camp orientation and training.

  4. Accountable for program specific, administrative duties, problem solving and parent/YMCA communications.

  5. Communicate problems, issues or concerns with supervisor.

  6. Ensure Senior Counselors call campers before each session to introduce self.

  7. Ensure open, positive communication and mentoring is provided to all staff on an ongoing basis.

  8. Posses the ability to relate to children, parents, peers, branch staff, volunteers and community.

  9. Actively participate in ALL of the camp activities, including swimming.

10. Follow all guidelines and procedures established by the YMCA.

11. Compile and provide counselors with supplies needed for each week and manage all program supplies to run a quality program within the framework of the budget.

12. Ensure counselors prepare needed materials and supplies for each day’s activities.

13. Responsible for ensuring diverse program experiences are provided for groups during camp day.

14. Understand difference between discipline and punishment. Use positive verbal and non-verbal communication with children to build trusting and stable relationships.

15. Keep up-to-date records on all children participating in the program.

16. Responsible for insuring the safety of all campers throughout the summer.

17. Know where children are at all times.

18. Children provided opportunities to build self-help and independence skills.

19. Ensure all children’s individual needs are met with dignity and respect.

20. Program equipment is cared for properly and checked daily for safety.

21. Indoor and outdoor space is monitored daily for health and safety concerns.

22. Report all repairs, incidents, and accidents to the Program Director. Reports made on appropriate forms and within required time frame.

23. Responsible to keep camp clean and sanitary to insure health and safety of all campers. Must strive to insure the preservation of the natural environment of the camp setting.

24. Keep a neat and clean appearance, in accordance with the standards set by the YMCA. Wear nametags and staff shirts while on duty.

25. Responsible for all aspects of quality customer service-including greeting parents, handling parent questions and concerns and staying informed of camp programs.

26. Serve as a relationship builder for site staff and families enhancing their commitment to the YMCA members and the mission.

27. Maintain and ensure confidentiality of all participants in the program.

28. Keeps current on any new camp activities or special events to assist and enhance the programs.

29. Able to interpret YMCA policy and procedures and make independent, sound judgments and decisions, which support the Gateway Region YMCA.

30. Reinforce and model the Membership By Design at all times.

Requirements

Education: High School diploma or equivalent & minimum 35 hours college credit

Experience:

Must be at least 21 years of age

Posses at least 2 years experience in camping or school age child care

Must have experience working with children

Must have strong communication, organization and detail skills

Must have the ability to relate to children, parents, branch staff members and volunteers

Must pass CPR/First Aid Certification

Must complete YMCA required trainings

Must follow directions, have strong leadership skills, be self-motivated and posses knowledge of group work principals and processes
