PURPOSE OF POSITION

In accordance with the Christian principles of the YMCA, the incumbent will provide leadership to the Aquatics Program and staff members. He/she will exemplify the “Y” values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith in all aspects of the position. He/she will follow all guidelines as established in the YMCA Aquatic Program Model.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
  1. Must be able to effectively communicate with staff, volunteers, and parents of program participants
  2. Must have the ability to maintain professional, respectful, positive attitude toward all members and co-workers.
  3. Requires the ability to supervise, train and evaluate performance of class participants and instructors.
  4. Must have good organizational and planning skills and sound judgment
  5. Aid in member retention by being knowledgeable, caring, and friendly to all members.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Attend in-services once a month.
  2. Serves as a liaison to parents.
  3. Is readily available on the pool deck to answer questions and to watch series swim
  4. Makes sure classes start and end on time.
  5. Ensures the safe return up of all participants to custodial adult at the end of class.
  6. Ensures all safety requirements are followed by staff during shift.
  7. Prepares class rosters and maintain originals for record keeping.
  8. Completes Aquatic Quick Checks and Deck Supervisor Report every work shift.
  9. Builds small communities among staff members.
  10. Provides encouragement and constructive criticism for all aquatic staff to improve staff performances.
  11. Ensures all guards receives one 15-minute break for every two hours they are on duty.
  12. Serves as effective communicator for service center by providing aquatic department program information.
  13. Reports problems, complaints, or concerns of participants to the aquatic cirector in a timely fashion.
  14. Evaluates all swimmers and places in correct classes based on skill levels.
  15. Responsible for teaching classes when no substitute is available.
  16. Develops and is familiar with pool usage schedules for lap and recreation swimmers.
  17. Responds to program evaluations with action plan in areas to improve programs.
  18. Maintains instructor-student ratios as set in program model.
  19. Completes evaluations on swim instructors and discusses with aquatic leadership.
  20. All other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Shifts: Mon/Wed 5:00-7:45pm & Saturday 9:30am-12pm

Requirements

Education: Some high school or equivalent.

Experience: One year as a swim instructor with 50 hours or more of instructing

Special skills, Licenses, Certifications or Equipment:
  • YMCA Lifeguard
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
  • Emergency Oxygen Administration
  • First Aid
  • YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor
Age Requirements:Miniumum 18 years of age
