JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the safe operation of automated refuse collection equipment used in the collection and disposal of solid waste material.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Operates various solid waste vehicles, including automated side loaders, front-end loaders, rear loaders, stake bed trucks, pick-up trucks, and other vehicles/equipment used to collect solid waste.
Uses various hand tools, rakes, shovels, hammers and wrenches to perform minor repair and maintenance on assigned equipment.Performs daily safety checks on assigned vehicle.
Cleans up scattered refuse; replace empty containers; explains refuse collection policies to customers; unloads refuse at landfill site.
Prepares and maintains a variety of written records and reports.
Other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
The safe operation of automated refuse collection vehicles and associated equipment.
Preventative maintenance procedures.
Ability to:
Follow both oral and written instructions.
Operate all required equipment.
Perform physical labor under adverse weather conditions.
Read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to the level of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities will qualify.
Experience:
Minimum of six months previous experience in the operation of refuse collection equipment.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED required.
Licenses:
Possession of a valid Class “B” or greater Commercial Driver’s License, with the appropriate endorsements is a requirement.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
The duties of this position are primarily performed outdoors in a field environment where the incumbent can reasonably expect to be exposed to all weather conditions and various hazardous substances such as explosive Fuels, oils and other lubricants, dust and moderately loud noise levels on a routine basis. Incumbents in this position can expect to routinely push, pull, lift and carry a minimum of 50lbs daily without assistance. Additionally, incumbents in this position should be physically able to bend, stoop, squat, kneel and reach in the performance of their daily duties. Incumbents in this position may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays and on an on-call basis.
This position has been classified as a “safety-sensitive” position in accordance with all-applicable laws and regulations. All incumbents assigned to a “safety-sensitive” position shall be required to comply with all provisions of the City of Sherman, Texas Commercial Vehicle Driver’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
