SPECIALIST, RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

Academic Success Coaches are integral staff members in the Excel Center and Academy. Their primary role is to promote continued student engagement in both the Excel Center and Academy and to serve as a student advocate. Each coach is responsible for a caseload of students, typically ranging from 65-80 students. In order to support student learning and productivity, coaches build relationships with students and provide resources to remove barriers from their educational progress. Effective coaches understand how to triage their caseloads by managing their core responsibilities while also being responsive to student crises as they arise. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provides information of open enrollment policy to potential students and community partners on an ongoing basis.

2. Monitors and maintains truancy tracking system of student progress and noticeable trends.

3. Uses retention and enrollment data to address term by term trends and develops a plan of action to address retention and enrollment goals.

4. Gathers background information on the student's social history by conducting observations, making home visits, conducting interviews, and reviewing student records.

5. Participates in the development of student recruitment and retention plans, and is responsible for implementation of the plan and for obtaining target enrollment goals.

6. Visits neighboring school districts and other community agencies frequently to speak to prospective students, guidance counselors, or to participate in workshops/retreats.

7. Provide input into the annual review of attendance policies and school calendar.

8. Facilitates staff training on recruitment best practices, truancy trends, and attendance interventions.

9. Serves as a resource to teachers and staff regarding social work services and the academic/social needs of students.

10. Serves as a member of the school leadership team.

11. Works closely with teachers, life coaches, and school leadership regarding students who have not yet completed the enrollment process or who are absent frequently upon enrollment.

12. Serves as a liaison between the student, home, school, counseling facilities and community resources such as social services, court services, and family service agencies.

13. Conducts specialized individual and group advising sessions to address specific emotional and social needs of students.

14. Creates and distributes resource materials for student recruitment and retention programs, and is responsible for adapting resources based on prospective student feedback and enrollment data.

15. Prepares reports and responds to inquiries from all students interested in enrolling or re-enrolling into the school.

16. Manages and monitors student information to ensure academic progress.

17. Compiles monthly reports and maintains accurate case records.

18. Performs casework services with students to help identify and resolve barriers to student entry into the school.

19. Conferences with and provides information, support, and advising to students.

20. Collaborates with instructors and other school personnel to monitor student progress and to identify pathways to success.

21. Performs other miscellaneous job related duties as assigned.

22. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Broad knowledge of such fields as accounting, marketing, business administration, finance, etc. Equivalent to a four year college degree, plus 2 years related experience and/or training, and 1 to 6 months related management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

MENTAL DEMAND

Very close mental demand. Operations requiring very close and continuous attention for control of operations which require a high degree of coordination or immediate response. Operations requiring intermittent direct thinking to determine or select the most applicable way of handling situations regarding the organization's administration and operations; also to determine or select material and equipment where highly variable sequences are involved.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Required Qualifications:

1.       Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.

2.       2 years of experience in social work, counseling, advising, academic guidance or related field

3.       Must possess ability to collect, interpret, and synthesize information about a student's social history, community environment, family dynamics, economic differences, and significant crises that influence academic and behavioral functioning.

4.       Must have demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as an interdisciplinary team member and devise an appropriate service plan for referred students and their families.

5.       Must possess the ability to synthesize and interpret diagnostic and assessment data.

6.       Must possess excellent communication and time management skills.

7.       Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community agencies, students, families, team members, and others.

8.       Requires occasional local travel/transporting individuals; valid driver's license, up-to-date auto insurance, and good driving record.

9.       Ability to accept and/or drive change positively; demonstrate strong planning and organizational skills and initiative

Preferred Qualifications

1.       Experience working with high school aged students in a nontraditional setting and/or an adult education setting strongly preferred
