PLEASE NOTE - This position may require temporarily relocation to other TONHC Facilities: Sells Hospital, Santa Rosa Health Center, San Simon Health Center, Casa Grande, and San Xavier Health Center.

Position Summary:

According to building and safety codes and regulations, install, service, and repair new and existing heating, venting, air conditioning, or cooling systems.

Scope of Work:

The position is located at TONHC, under the general supervision of the Facility Manager or Maintenance Supervisor, and the incumbent is required to be on-call in a 24/7 operation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install, service, and repair new and existing environmental control systems in residences, office buildings, and commercial establishments.
  • Inspects existing environmental control units, providing routine maintenance of units, replacing or repairing equipment and parts including Freon or other fluids.
  • Mount compressor and condenser units on platform or floor, using hand tools, and following blueprints or engineering specifications.
  • Inspects new heating and AC or cooling systems/units for conformity to building safety codes.
  • Perform heating and cooling installations.
  • Monitors chillers, pumps, broilers, and logs all pressure and taps.
  • Connects motors, compressors, temperature and humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to a power source.
  • Install air and water filters in completed installations.
  • Injects small amount of refrigerant into compressor to test systems; adds Freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure.
  • Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to ensure efficient operation.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance to ensure that HVAC equipment continues to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, or the physical condition of the building does not deteriorate.
  • Test electrical circuits and components for continuity using electrical test equipment.
  • Replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and
  • Joins tubing or pipe to various refrigerating units using sleeves, couplings, unions, and solders joints utilizing a torch, forming a complete circuit for the refrigerant.
  • Install expansion and discharge valves in the circuit.
  • Cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment and tools.
  • Complies with safety rules and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Maintain required reports and records.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences.
  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of the current standards and safety codes for heating and cooling systems.
  • Knowledge of current OSHA and EPA rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of duct venting, heating, and cooling systems, CFR coolants, and gases.
  • Knowledge of broiler systems, electrical systems, and their components.
  • Skill in installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and testing heating and cooling systems.
  • Skill in operating HVAC equipment and tools.
  • Skill in basic math and using measuring instruments.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to coordinate assignments/tasks with other departments, programs, or construction trade.
  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, schematics, diagrams, and or sketches.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
  • Ability to travel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED, and
  • Three years journeyman-level HVAC experience.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Licensed Journeyman HVAC Technician or equivalent licensure.
  • EPA Type II
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham language and English as a condition of employment.
